Out In Front In Class 3A

The Hope Christian Huskies and the St. Michael's Horsemen are number one and number two in the latest NMPreps.com 3A Rankings. The two played their first two games against each other during week seven and though the two teams split, it was Hope Christian outscoring St. Michael's 11-10 in the two games. Hope Christian key wins against Cobre, Sandia Prep, and now St. Michael's on the year and currently have a record of 16-3.

Key players include Keenan Dodd, Nate Burford, Tyler Nelson, and Ian Sutton. While this team is playing exceptionally well Head Coach Sean Anthony has a youthful roster that includes just five seniors and eight sophomores. The Horsemen at 11-6 on the year also have a key win against Cobre, Raton, and Robertson.

What you have to like about the Horsemen is the quality of competition they have played. Losses against Cibola, Hobbs, and Carlsbad are going to have this team battle tested come play-off time. Week Seven Top Performer's List

As you've read all season long the team is headlined by 6-foot-5 Colin Friedman on the mound, Friedman has thrown three no-hitters this season. Junior Pitcher/Outfielder Marc Brandy has been a key addition to the line up and the Horsemen have a few other lesser known players that can flat out play.

Who's Next In Line In Class 3A

Portales, Cobre, Sandia Prep, and Robertson are the teams next in line after the two District 5-3A Private Schools. Portales is 13-3 on the season with key wins against Clovis, Hobbs, Eunice, and Robertson. They are also 2-0 in district play with wins against Lovington and Ruidoso. The Rams have been getting big production from Ryan Schmidt and Brandon Lovato. Top 25 New Mexico Rankings

Schmidt seems to have found his stroke as he has hit two home runs in the last three games. Cobre is 11-3 on the year and as you know if you follow 3A baseball Cobre Does Baseball. Head Coach Demetrio Sanchez has a ton of experience on this year's club as they literally only lost one to graduation form the 2011 season.

Regan Ramos can swing the stick with the best of them and Daniel Castrillo has also played big this year. Cobre has key wins against Silver, Deming, and Lordsburg, but has also lost to St. Michael's and Hope Christian in close games.

The 2011 State Champ Sandia Prep no doubt lost a ton of talent from the previous year roster and though their season has been up and down we can't right this team off through eight weeks of play.

They have key wins against Highland, Los Lunas, and Ruidoso. Losses come against Robertson, Rio Grande, Hope Christian, and Ruidoso. Leading the charge for the Sun Devil's is four year starter Roberto Martinez one of the top outfielders in Class 3A.

No one has really talked about Robertson this season, but they have a salty ball club that is capable is making some noise at the end of the season. Dalan Abreu, Luke Aragon, Antonio Argullo, Girard Maestas, and Ryan Tafoya each have great experience, however Robertson has came up short in marquee games this year. Losses to Socorro, Portales, and to St. Michael's should be learning curves as this team makes a run for district.

3A Still In the Mix

Raton, Silver, Socorro Lovington, and Ruidoso. The Tigers from the Far North of the State have a record of 2-3 according to the NMAA website, but it's safe to say they have played more than five games this year. Gorge Marquez has three home runs on the year and Blake Washburn just threw a no-hitter.

Two prospects to keep tabs on as the Tigers make a run against Robertson for the district title. What is eye opening about Raton is their recent play against Portales in which they lost two games by the combined score of 25-5. Week Seven Prep Baseball Stats

Not sure which team is going to rise up between Silver and Socorro in District 3-3A. Silver recently beat Socorro 7-2 in district, but lacks season key wins. Socorro at 7-7 on the year has beaten Belen, Sandia Prep, Robertson, but recently lost to Magdalena and Silver. After Portales in District 4-3A, you have Lovington and Ruidoso who should be definite play-off teams.

Lovington has a tone of underrated players like David Robles, Clay Plant, and Cesar Trevizo. Key wins for the Wildcats come against Dexter, Eunice, and Ruidoso. Though Ruidoso is 3-8 on the year we still like their chances of making the final field of 16 in Class 3A. Julian Lopez has done a great job on the mound this year racking up close to 30 K's. Denver Coronado is a key utility player and their have one key win against Sandia Prep.
