Grine: What I Learned

5A - What I've learned

No "true" favorite or dominant power.
(1) Rio Rancho was my pick to win it all at the start and I stick to that pick but this race is extremely close.

(2) Las Cruces, (3) Eldorado and (4) La Cueva could be favorites for a possible title run and fill the semi-final slots based on records and work they have done up until today.....but I like teams that could shock you to make a run.

(5) Manzano, (6) Mayfield and maybe (7-8) Clovis could be that team that shocks you in the quarterfinals and they are three teams that if this was a betting game wouldn't have great odds to win it all. Obviously, Mayfield fans will take the bet 'cuz of great coaching and tradition but who else takes that bet. These three teams are the most dangerous I say for an upset team. Clovis seems to be a play or stop away from putting some teams away. ?

What about the rest
(8-7) Atrisco Heritage in my opinion, I mean no harm at all just saying, are my NFL Cardinals similar type team. Nice record and shocked people early and yes they will make State Tournament only for one game though.?
(9) Carlsbad it hurts because I was trying to be bold early in the preseason and proclaimed you a semi-final to title contender type team. I think it's a one and done year again.?
(10) Cleveland- (11) Sandia- (12) Valley three similar teams and I want to say Cleveland-Sandia could be in the section above but they need some sort of staple win, maybe next week? I guess the verdict is still out on these three.?

Well, might as well post what I learned from 4A....

(1) Goddard is the favorite and we have all learned they are unstoppable (haha).?

(2) Los Lunas- (3)?Artesia- (4) PV- (5) Belen: The four horsemen that are very good teams and any one of the four will play Goddard in the State Title. Including Goddard this programs are seeds 1-5 without question or debate up to this point. If I was placing a bet in Vegas (and I love betting) I would make sure I saved some money to place on one of them. Just hard because Goddard seems like the sure bet (but I thought that last year too).?

(6) Deming - (7) Roswell: If any team could shock someone it is either one of these two teams. People said I was waaaay off for saying Roswell was my preseason #5 and no way better than SPX this year. Well, I have yet to name Pius. Deming also was in my Top 8 teams and after a nice win over a good Silver team they could become higher. FYI when they win D3-4A they could receive a nice seed in the tournament.?

(8) Farmington - (9) Aztec - (10) Grants - (11) Miyamura: Oh what a District affair from here on out for these four teams. Fun point is we punch a ticket for Grants and Miyamura in week 7, winner is likely in loser out. Aztec is warming up to a new coach and looking to be on the upswing but one and done in the tournament still. Farmington making noise and possibly one of it's biggest weeks beating SPX.?

(12) District 5-4A Champ/District 2-4A Champ: Yes, both champs go to State and one will be an 11-seed once Grants-Miyamura finishes next week. St. Pius X has weapons but just not getting it done they will battle Moriarty and the winner is in. In District 2-4A and potential winner of the 12-seed I have Santa Fe High as my favorite but Los Alamos showed some life in the win over AA.?

Class 3A

(1) St. Mike's is my favorite, your favorite, Hendo's favorite, my kids favorite, my neighbor's favorite, and anyone who bets favorite. No need to say more that's "One bad team" and bad as in bada..

(2) Ruidoso - (3) Lovington - (4) Silver: Yes, Ruidoso at the two spot 6-0 is impressive and are they going to beat St. Mike's well I wouldn't go that far but hey anything can happen didn't the Giants go to the superbowl and with horrible odds. Oct. 12 meeting with Silver is a can't wait! It will tell us a lot and also they finish the year with Lovington. We will soon see who is #2. Lovington and Silver are two teams around the same caliber (this season) just one thing separates them and that's Lovington knows how to win in the playoffs (every season). I will always throw extra money towards a bet like that.?

THERE IS A MAJOR GAP
(5) Taos - (6) Hope Christian - (7) Socorro: Three teams, one and a half stories. Taos is having a stellar season and the folks should be proud up there. Hope-Socorro squared off in week six and Hope was a touchdown better but they are still behind Taos who beat them in Week 1 or 2 (Can't remember).?

EVEN BIGGER GAP
(8) Abq. Academy - (9) Bloomfield - (10) ?Robertson: Academy is having a below average season but can you ever count out a team and coach that has been to the title game. Bloomfield yes I am showing some love to the Bobcats for entering playoff talk, need to beat Miyamura and you could have been in the 5-7 section like Taos. Robertson good but not quite great the week one OT win over Portales has you a nose ahead of them. This group is the building for tomorrow section.?

UMMM....
(11) Hot Springs - (12) Shiprock: Hats off to the new coach at Hot Springs but the loss to MVC hurt and if they would have won maybe top 10 vote from me. Shiprock!? Well, they will battle with new District mate Bloomfield for the District 1-3A title and chance to play in the 2012 State Tournament.....

Worth the mention...
(13) Portales - (14) Pojoaque Valley: Well PHS plays in a tough District but still a quality program (1-4 though?). PV comes from the one hit wonder District 2-3A and will need to upset Taos for the State Playoff bid. Nice 3-2 record though.?

Class 2A

(1) Santa Rosa: "Can't stop, won't stop" the Lions of Santa Rosa. They look killer and are doing work as the Goddard Rockets are doing in the upper division. I love seeing the Santa Rosa Lions being in the New Mexico Top 25. Is it the first 2A team??

(2) Texico - (3) Tularosa: Well, keeping the song lyric theme Texico is probably the "Next best thing". The Wolverines did work and stayed above water beating 1A favorite Ft. Sumner. Tularosa is a sort-of dark horse player as they have talent and have lost some games but could eventually "but I get up again".?

(4) Lordsburg: Okay by default I think they could move up in the rankings with losses from Tuc., HV, and Dexter. Don't they have that killer running back? Well if they stay winning they could become a high seed. Three things they need to do to end the season; beat Tularosa (Oct. 19), beat Hatch Valley (Oct. 26) and beat Mesilla Valley (Nov. 2).?

(5) Estancia - (6) Eunice: This could change with a date against Santa Rosa coming up really soon but for now they could climb to the fifth spot even if it is for a week or two. Eunice makes the biggest jump in my book with the win over Tucumcari.?

(7) Tucumcari - (8) Hatch Valley - (9) Dexter: They all slide down this week with the three going a combined (0-3) last week. Shocked by the Tucumcari loss to Eunice, Surprised Hatch Valley lost to Centennial and thought it would have been closer against Santa Rosa then again Santa Rosa is in a league of their own this year.?

(10) Mesilla Valley Christian: Nice win over 3A Hot Springs but stay put at 10 until they win and leap frog some squads..

FYI not rankings of any sort just how I see teams right now. Making it easier to read on where I see some teams.?
