2012 Class 3A State Title Game
The Last time these two 3A titans met was back in week nine and Silver jumped to a 14-0 start. Just like that, it looked as the Horsemen would suffer their first loss of the 2012 season. While the Horsemen made some solid second half adjustments and escaped Silver with a 28-21 victory we learned two things after the game. One being that these two teams would likely meet again and two that St. Michael's was beatable.
Nearly, six weeks later the two teams met again in the play-offs for the first time since the late 80's in the 3A State Title Game for a rematch of what is the pound for pound best match up taking place this weekend. The Silver Colts are led by third year Head Coach Butch Branson who has one of the more physical football teams we've seen this year.
Their defense is allowing just 10.9 points per game because of their A+ linebacker tandem in Justin Trewen and Dakota Bencomo. In the secondary, Franky Castillo has recorded seven interceptions this year and Derek Salas has recorded eight interceptions playing both ways. On offense, they are led by Nevada Bencomo who has rushed for 1,236-yards and 18 touchdowns on the season and Derek Salas who has thrown for over 1,000-yards and 8 touchdowns.
Defense Wins Championships
The St. Michael's Horsemen pride themselves off Big Defense and arguably have one of the top defensives in the State of New Mexico allowing less than 700-yards this year and giving up just 6.41 points per game. On Offense, Quarterback Cory Serna has thrown for 1,955-yards and 24 touchdowns, Running Back/Receiver Salomon Martinez has ran for 596-yards with 22 touchdowns, and caught for 608-yards with 8 touchdowns.
Now while every team is going to have athletes who can make plays, what has set the Horsemen apart from the pack this season is their size.
6-foot-5, 300 pound offensive tackle Andres Blea is a 1st Team All-State Offensive Linemen/Defensive Linemen, 6-foot-4, 220 pound Tight End/Linebacker/Kicker is an NMPreps.com All-State Player at three different positions, 6-foot-3, 265 Pound Griffith Barth is a 1st Team All-State Offensive Linemen, 6-foot-3, 200 pound Junior Isaiah Dominguez is a 2nd Team All-State Defensive Linemen, so as you can see the Horsemen are a tough match up size wise for any team in 3A.
Other contributors for St. Michael's include: Josh Carrasco at defensive back, Michael Gormley at a variety of positions, and Junior Play-Maker Daniel Ortega who is an NMPreps.com 1st Team All-State Linebacker.
As stated, this game is the pound for pound best match up taking place this weekend and to be honest, the two programs can't wait to settle it on the field. There is going to be a ton of emotion during this game, and the key for St. Michael's will be limiting offensive turnovers. It's hard for me to see Silver hitting the 30 point mark because no one has done it all year against the Horsemen. I think it's going to be a similar score as last time, I'll go with St. Michael's 21, Silver 14 in a hard hitting 48 minutes.
