The 14th Annual Marty Saiz Metro Area State Farm High School Football Banquet was held December 17th, 2012 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to honor high school football players from the Albuquerque Metro Area.
Over 650 attended the event held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Albuquerque as athletes were awarded for their academics and as well as some post season football honors which were chosen based off in-season play by the Albuquerque Metro Coaches Association.
Senior Student Athlete: Austin Patterson, Rio Rancho
The Senior Student Athlete Award went to West Mesa Quarterback Dominic Davis for his fantastic 4.1 G.P.A and his community efforts being a big part of Road Runner Food Bank. The Bill Gentry Award went to Rio Rancho Receiver Austin Patterson.
Patterson, very humbled by the award which is selected by legendary former Head Coach Bill Gentry himself said, "Really thankful for my coaching staff and teammates this year."
The 4A/3A Player of the Year went to Los Lunas Defensive Linemen Greg Wortman who helped Los Lunas to a 12-1 season reaching their first football state title in school history. The 5A Player of the Year went to Romell Jordan the New Mexico Lobo Commit out of Cleveland High School who scored 35 touchdowns this year.
The 4A/3A Coach of the Year was Jeremy Newton who accepted the award and clearly stated that their efforts this year was because of the team and coaching staff. Newton has been at Los Lunas for just three seasons and has won a total of 30 games over that short tenure.
The 5A Coach of the Year was Rio Rancho Head Coach David Howes. Howes thanked all the Metro Area Coaches and pointed out that Kevin Barker of Sandia should be receiving this award not him.
Marty Saiz and his small staff knocked a daunting task of hosting the Metro Area Awards.
