Who's No. 1 In 5A Girls Basketball?
As we jump into 2013, we quickly look at the top tier teams in Class 5A. with our new top five rankings for 2012. The Southern New Mexico Talent at the big school level is deep and these five teams lead the way. Poll: Which team is best: Las Cruces, Mayfield, Hobbs, Clovis, or Sandia
Who's hot starting off in 2012
Mayfield lady trojans 13-1
Buzz: The Mayfield Trojans only loss this season comes against 12-1 Hobbs in a 38-37 thriller on December 28th of 2012. The Trojans have some impressive wins this year beating several El Paso, Texas teams, and also beating Hobbs, Cleveland, Roswell, and rio Rancho during the month of December. Their prime time player is Junior Post Daeshianna McCAnts who is arguably the top inside post player in New Mexico. Mayfield has a daunting January Schedule which includes games against Eldorado, Volcano Vista, Hobbs, before they kick off their first game against Las Cruces on January 29th.
Hobbs lady eagles 12-1
Buzz: What is not to like about the Hobbs Lady Eagles right now? Their lone loss of the season comes against Mayfield who they have split with on the year, but recently beat 38-37 in late December. Marquee wins also come against Estacado, Texas, Roswell, and beat Clovis their district rival 50-44 during the Rio Rancho Mel Otero Tournament. You have not heard much about this group during the 2012 year, but let it be known that this team could win it all in 2013. What is most impressive about Hobbs is they have just two seniors on the roster: Elena Calderon and Mackenzie Latimer. They will play both Las Cruces and Mayfield in the month of January and will meet Clovis in district in early February.
clovis lady wildcats 11-1
Buzz: Clovis is dangerous and recently flexed their muscle during the Plateau Holiday Tournament beating Gallup 74-37 in a no contest match up. Their lone loss this season comes against losing to District Rival Hobbs 50-44 back in the Mel Otero Tournament in Rio Rancho, but since then Clovis is 5-0 win wins over Rio Rancho, Canyon, Texas, Albuquerque, Texico, and Gallup. Leading the way for Clovis is the Super Sophomore Danni Williams who has college offers to spare and is the top prospect in the Class of 2015. Valley, La Cueva, and Eldorado await in January and if Clovis can emerge 3-0 against some very talented Metro Area Teams, Clovis will continue to show the pollsters that they are no pretender and very capable of winning the whole thing.
las cruces lady bulldawgs 11-1
Buzz: Tons of talent and tons of depth make this group a Final Four Favorite. Coach Matt Abney and the Lady Bulldawgs are doing work and while their 2012 year ended with a 47-34 loss to Hobbs the Bulldawgs have shown that they are capable of beating anyone in the State of New Mexico. What impressed was their 53-50 win over Santa Fe Indian and their early wins against Miyamura, Cleveland, and Onate. Overall, they have not played the most potent schedule, but that will change in January as they take on Hobbs, Eldorado, Volcano Vista, and begin district play meeting Mayfield in late January. Amber Fratzola, Kayla Sparks, and Alyssa de Rouen are a dangerous trio.
sandia lady matadors 8-1
Buzz: The Lady Matadors have a lot to prove during the start of the 2013 season and a good showing in the Metro Area Tournament would boost their season prestige. Currently, Sandia lacks key wins and just a few weeks back they were drubbed by Gallup 52-30. The good news is they have one of the top coaches in the Metro Area in Susan Kubala who has a wealth of knowledge and with talent led by All-State Candidate Astrea Reed, Sandia looks to be the dark horse are we enter the second half of the season. Stay tuned on Sandia.
