Week Nine: We have already seen upset this weekend but they won't stop come this weekend. We take a look at some games you want to see this weekend.

Marquee Game: Upset Weekend

  • POTENTIAL 5A FINAL FOUR GAME
No. 1 La Cueva Bears vs. No. 8 Volcano Vista Hawks: This Friday night semi-final game of the APS Metro Championship is a must see game of the new year. Both teams ranked as top ten teams of the NMPreps.com Top 25.
The Match-Up: People are already talking about the Bryce Alford vs. Sam Haywood match-up and I have mentioned this match up already. I like what both guards bring to the table and as the song goes, "Let's get physical". This one will get exciting as you have two guards who like to score and can score.
X-Factor: Kendall Johnson, Volcano Vista has been given credit all week long but the big man deserves it for the game he has had. He is quickly rising on every chart and will likely rise in next weeks Mr. Basketball conversations.
Grine's Pick: Volcano Vista with the upset here. The reason doesn't have to do with the match-up players or X-factor, though they are key players but for the role players for the Hawks. Matty Martinez the point guard for Volcano Vista and utility men Connor Anderson and Chase Anderson who provide you everything you need in role players.

  • Week Nine Bracket Watch: Road To The PIT

  • 4A SEEDING IMPLICATIONS GAME
No. 15 Albuquerque Academy Chargers vs. Los Lunas Tigers: The match-up would have had more "marquee" behind it a week ago but could still see it's affects come March. The Chargers are ranked No. 3 in 4A right now and the Tigers are No. 12 in 4A.
The Match-Up: Two different types of teams in this one with the Tigers backcourt verse the Chargers front court. The match-up to possibly keep an eye on is Tigers wing/forward Jacob Holland (6'3"/Senior) against Chargers forward Tommy Lindgren (6'3"/Senior). Both can shoot and put some decent numbers on the board. They won't kill you with 20 plus points but will get in buckets. Both are averaging around 12 to 13 points per game as well.
X-Factor: Ben Romero (Guard/Los Lunas), the senior can shoot and this season it seems he has been handling the ball more instead of a key role player like his time at Manzano. Allowing him to spot up will only help this team with the other talents they have.
Grine's Pick: Another upset pick by me taking the Tigers of Los Lunas in this one. I think they have many weapons unlike some of the teams on the Chargers wins columns. Fun game though and you can never underestimate a Chargers team.

    Other Games To Watch

Friday: No. 2 Eldorado vs. No. 4 Valley: The Eagles in Vikings were predicted to meet up today but in the winners bracket. Well, either way this great match-up should be a fun one to watch if you are in the area - 5:45 PM at Manzano High School. It's part of the Metro Championships taking place this weekend.
    Grine's Pick: Valley +2

Friday: No. 10 Sandia vs. No. 12 Atrisco Heritage: Both teams are playing very well right now and they upset some Top-10 teams on Wednesday night. The winner also goes to the APS Title Game. I have to like the guards from Atrisco Heritage who I have bet against to many times and plus its's upset week nine.
    Grine's Pick: Jags +1.33

Friday: No. 14 Cibola vs. No. 17 Manzano: One team (Manzano) is playing great and the other (Cibola) is looking to regroup after some major losses as of late. The match-up will be fun one and tons of New Mexico's top players in action.
    Grine's Pick: Manzano +10
