Today we release the beginning of our early season baseball top 25 rankings.
top 25 baseball teams in New Mexico - The countdown
#11 Rio Grande ravens
Buzz: The Rio Grande Ravens should be due for a solid season in 2013. They were upset by the Rio Rancho Rams in the 2012 5A Tournament losing in round one. What we like about this year's squad is the fact that they return left handed pitcher and power hitter Matt Valdez who was an All-Metro Selection as a junior. They also return Chris Vega who is a multi purpose player along with Jerrell Stevens. Rio Grande along with Valley and Atrisco from District 5-5A are each play-off capable. The only question is: Which team will grab the District Title in 2013.
#12 cleveland storm
Buzz: The Cleveland Storm lose some very talented players like James Cleveland, Matt Corrales, Matt Villalobos, and Nate Lucero along with some other notable seniors who reached the quarterfinals only to lose to 5A State Champ Carlsbad 4-1. Cleveland over the years like rival Rio Rancho has emerged as a top flight baseball high school program that produces yearly top prospects and very good well rounded teams. We know Chris Foster returns, who was a top player in 2012, but other than we don't know much about this group. Our early season prediction is this team is not going to drop off anytime soon. New names will emerge shortly.
#13 las cruces bulldawgs
Buzz: Las Cruces had a disappointing ending to the 2012 season losing some key district games in the late season and then losing to Volcano Vista in the first round 5A tournament. The good news is they return some very talented returners that were production in their sophomore/junior seasons. Donovan Silva at catcher had a huge season as a junior, Jonathan Joy who helped the Bulldawgs win the 5A Football State Title returns on the mound, Brandon Salmon had a big season as a sophomore, and JT Romney is one of the best unknown athletes in the Las Cruces area. The Bulldawgs on paper already look better than the 2012 squad.
#14 farmington scorpions
Buzz: Farmington Baseball is still Farmington Baseball. While rival Piedra Vista has stolen the spotlight over the years becoming one of the more dominate programs in New Mexico regardless of Class, Farmington has not dropped off in terms of talent. Las tear Farmington reached the quarterfinals before losing a battle round game against Academy 4-3 in extra innings. The Scopions return Colby Nelson at 1st Base, Austin Davis one of the top outfielders in 4A, and have pitchers Matt Huffhines, and Davis returning. Hard to ever count Farmington out of the bigger picture. The Scorpions should make their annual run to the baseball play-offs and this year a final four birth is not out of the question.
#15 goddard rockets
Buzz: The Rockets reached the second round of the 2012 4A Play-Offs beating Atrisco Heritage in the first round. Losing to Piedra Vista 19-2 was a terrible ending, however you don't get better unless you face the best at their best. Point is: Goddard should be much better from their 2012 experiences and on top of that, Goddard has some dangerous retiring talent making them the District 4-4A Favorite. Austin Rader is final a Senior and a very solid pitcher, Brad Blackwell returns at Shortstop, Cody French one of the best football players in New Mexico is also a solid pitcher and outfielder, Mitchell Weathers should contribute at 1st Base, Chase Hubbard and Taryn Nunez are also names to know. This looks like a boom or bust type team in 2013.
