Week Thirteen: It's Friday night and we bring you everything you need to know for the weekend.
Friday Night Highlights
No. 4 Hobbs vs. No. 7 Clovis: (Ralph Tasker Arena)
(Kyle Henderson, Owner of NMPreps.com brings you the highlights.)
1. Never a sure thing in New Mexico sports: We seen some surprises on the football field and now the basketball seasons continues to throw shockers. Two scores that jump out is No. 12 Volcano Vista falling to Cleveland and Del Norte beating No. 19 Albuquerque Academy.
2. Musical Chairs continues in 5A: The 5A seeding process is going to be an interesting one with everyone having some sort of claim over another. West Mesa is playing their way back in with their win over No. 25 Rio Grande and then No. 7 Clovis over No. 4 Hobbs sending the Eagles to 0-2 this week.
3. Continue to show that they are for real this year: The Deming Wildcats top Santa Teresa by two on Friday night letting the Wildcats prove that they are contenders this season. The roster make-up is there and they could be a dangerous team come March. Don't hesitate to pick them.
Prime Time Player: Mahlik Sims
Friday Night: The Albuquerque HIgh Bulldogs point guard continues to impress this season and had another stellar performance with 20 points and 10 assists in the District 5-5A win over Highland.
Bracket Watch: PIT Stop
5A Bubble Factors: West Mesa 48, No. 25 Rio Grande 40. The West Mesa Mustangs (8-12, 3-3) have played their way back IN the picture of the state tournament with two big wins this week. The No. 25 Rio Grande Ravens (8-12, 3-3) on the other hand could be playing their way out with the two losses this week.
Shocker: Cleveland 60, No. 12 Volcano Vista 57. Perhaps the score that made you shocked was this one. The Storm who were well out of the playoff picture just made you rethink that jumping back into the conversation and move into runner-up spot of District 1-5A to end the week.
Upset Alert: Del Norte 62, No. 19 Academy 61. The Del Norte Knights (6-14, 1-1) are somewhat of a late bloomer program. Last season they were placed in the same situation and almost same record when they decide to win. The Knights upset of the Academy Chargers (12-7, 1-1) puts the Knights in second place in District 5-4A as well to end the week.
More Confusion : No. 9 Atrisco Heritage 57, No. 3 Valley 51. The Atrisco Jaguars (14-6, 3-3) made sure to confuse the rankings, bracket watch and District standings. This season is a fun ride and several teams are making their presence known. The No. 3 Valley Vikings (16-4, 5-1) had full control, and still do, of District 5-5A but this loss could tend to make this District more interesting for the title.
Out of their slump: Albuquerque High (beat Highland)
In a slump: Moriarty (Lost to St. Pius X)
Too Close: Carlsbad (Lost to Artesia)
1A, I see you: Cliff (20-1 on the season)
Make it 13: Dexter (Smashed NMMI)
Rival Close: Roswell (Barely edge out rival Goddard)
