Today we have updated our New Mexico High School Wrestling Rankings
#1 ranked Cleveland High School has not lost a dual to a New Mexico team this season, they beat Piedra Vista early in the season and are the favorite to win Class 5A. Watch for Clayton Pankey at 220 as he is 34-5 on the season, Angel Castillo at 160 could be a sleeper prospect to watch, and of course Paul Mascarenas who is going for his fourth state title in as many years at 113.
#2 ranked Piedra Vista is a team that could make a run at the Class 5A level, yes a 4A power that has that much talent this year. Their only season blemish is losing to Cleveland in the Southwest Duals early this season. The clear favorite to win Class 4A is led by Sam Sandoval at 106 who is 38-3 this season, undefeated Jacob Palmgren at 120, Anthony Juckes at 132 who has won 37 matches this year, and Wyatt Hardy at 160 who is 30-10.
#3 ranked Rio Rancho has the roster to compete with inner city rival Cleveland. They won the Metro Area Championship and are led this year by: Jordan Lara at 160 who is 24-12 on the year, Miguel Barreas at 152 who is 31-5 and Ladigo Williams who despite took second in district is 30-8 this year. Also watch for Orlando Gutierrez at 132 as he is 25-5 this season.
#4 ranked Rio Grande has made some noise all season long and remember they have a dual win over Rio Rancho this year. Watch for Matias Sainz at 138 who is 31-5 this year, and the 195 pound favorite Nick Chavez who is unbeaten at 30-0 this year.
#5 ranked Volcano Vista comes from the toughest district in the state so we know they are battle tested for the State Tournament. Willie Chavez at 106 pounds is 33-4 this year and Lawrence Otero at 138 is having another outstanding season at 32-1.
#6 ranked Atrisco Heritage is as scrappy as they come. They will compete very well and could send four in the finals. Watch for Ismael Chavez at 285 who is 29-3 this year. We also like Nathan Corrigan at 152, he is 30-7 this year and the District Champ of 5-5A.
#7 ranked Deming is the next 4A team in line after Piedra Vista. At 106 they have Matt Hernandez who is 31-2 this year, Mikey Hernandez at 113 is also 31-2, Daniel Myers at 138 is 28-6, and then there is David Padron at 152 who is unbeaten at 34-0 this season.
#8 ranked St. Michael's is the top ranked small school team headed into the State Tournament. This team is gunning for another State Title and led by Jose Ocampo at 138 who is 26-5 this season, Kory Windham who could be one of the pound for pound top wrestlers in New Mexico at 160, Luke Sanchez at 170 who is 26-5 this year, and 285 Andres Blea who is so far perfect with 32 wins and no losses this year.
#9 ranked Cobre is going to make a run at knocking off the Horsemen. They have a loaded roster headed to the State Tournament. At 113 is Robert Rodriguez who is just an 8th grader, but is 31-4 this season. Daniel Soliz at 120 has won 28 matches this year, Brent Horsely had won 33 matches this year, and watch for Francisco Perez at 170 who is 24-1 on the year.
#10 ranked Silver City is going to have their say about who wins Class 3A this year. 106 Cesar Sierra is 32-5 this year, Regan Morales at 126 is 27-4, 152 Tim Mathieu is 28-5, Ricky Bencomo at 182 is 30-1, and Dakota Bencomo is the 195 pound favorite with a 22-0 record. Get ready for Silver to make a serious run.
#11 ranked Belen is very young, but still a very capable program who should not be overlooked this weekend. Watch for Matt Lucero at 132 who is 34-6 this year and 145 Pound Wyatt Robinson who is gunner for another state title with a record of 35-2.
#12 ranked Los Lunas is another Valencia County power trying to leave their mark at the State Tournament. We like Isaac Parra at 195 as he is 19-4 this year. Also at 120 is Richardo Alvarado who is a 25 match winner.
#13 ranked Mayfield is a District Champ who always seems to be in the hunt after day one. You just cannot can't out the Trojans until it's all over with. Leading the way is Robert Gomez at 160 who is 31-4 this season.
#14 ranked Las Cruces is right behind their City Rival Mayfield and like Mayfield, the Bulldawgs are going to be tough to put away. Watch for one of the best at 106 Dylan Udero who is a freshmen sensation with a record of 29-0.
#15 ranked Manzano might be the sleeper in Class 5A this year. They are led by Chris Martinez who is a senior with a record of 36-3. Manzano is a quality program that knows how to compete during this time of year.
#16 ranked Valley has been in the mix all year long. They have battled with Atrisco Heritage and Rio Grande and are obviously another battle tested team. Watch for Seth Mello at 220 who is 17-2 this season.
#17 ranked Robertson is a program still atop the 3A scene. While talent has dipped a bit, their coaching staff is still considered one of the best in the State of New Mexico. Watch for Richard Montoya at 120 who is an outstanding 39-1 this year.
#18 ranked Gadsden has some major talent headed to the Star Center this weekend. 182 pound David Avila is 28-3 this year and Eric Lopez at 285 is 26-2 on the year.
#20 ranked Los Alamos is led by Lane Saunders who is an eight grader with a record of 34-4.
