district 5-5A summer buzz
#73 ALBUQUERQUE BULLDOGS | 2013 SCHEDULE HERE
Buzz: Tim Garro replaces Mike Zufall as Head Coach as the Head Coaching Door continues to rotate for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs had a few players sign with Eastern New Mexico this recruiting season, so the talent is there. This team has not won a game in several seasons, will that change in 2013? Question is: Does a New Head Coach mean new life at Albuquerque High? The players have been there, butt he numbers have been down for a program that is more 4A than 5A.
#15 ATRISCO HERITAGE JAGUARS | 2013 SCHEDULE HERE
Buzz: Their first year in Class 5A ws a major success with the Jaguars going 8-3 under first year Head Coach Patrick Johnson. They lose their quarterback Nate Goode, but return some quality defensive players along with game breaker Ricci Alvidrez. Atrisco Heritage is a team that no one is talking about and that's ok for a team that looks like a giant sleeper again for the 2013 season. Atrisco is no longer a sleeper in the Metro, they are big and ready to make another run at the District 5-5A title. Complete Preview Linked Here
#39 HIGHLAND HORNETS | 2013 SCHEDULE HERE
Buzz: Highland loses some big time athletes like Rishad Ortiz and Mustafa Mudada, but the good news is they return three year starter Bryan Medina at quarterback. The Hornets are always going to have speed, but their offense line needs to step up. Watch for names like Dominic Key and Tyler Thompson who showed well at the NMPreps.com Elite Combine. Highland always has talent and they have a solid head coach in Derek Maestas. Don't write them off just yet.
#64 RIO GRANDE RAVENS | 2013 SCHEDULE HERE
Buzz: The Rio Grande Ravens scored just 11 points per game during the 2012 season under Head Coach Jim Danner. They did end the season beating Albuquerque 43-14 to finish district with a record of 2-8. Last year the Ravens were 1-7 against teams from Class 5A. They scored 11.9 points per game and allowed 37.3 points on defense. They ended on a high note however beating Albuquerque 43-14. Watch for linebacker Patrick Lucero.
#7 VALLEY VIKINGS | 2013 SCHEDULE HERE
Buzz: The Valley Vikings were 2-8 during the 2011 season, Enrico Marcelli took over for long time Valley Head Football Coach Vince Collins and turned the program around as the Vikings posted their best record over the last six years going 7-4 on the season. In fact the Vikings were just 10 points away from being 10-1 last year, losing by one point to La Cueva, losing by seven to Eldorado, and losing to Volcano Vista by two in the play-offs. For the second year in a row they return 18 starters, but this year expectations are not to have a winning record, but to make a run at the 5A state championship. Their 2013 Team Motto, "I Believe." #37 West Mesa Mustangs | 2013 SCHEDULE HERE
Buzz: The Mustangs will enter year two of the Ron McMath Era. Last year was a learning experience, but this year West Mesa could be that spoiler team from District 5-5A. They return an athlete we'll see at the NMPreps.com Elite Combine: Khmaree McCray who is a top multi-purpose athlete. West Mesa has a bit of bite every year and while they are generally overlooked in the Metro Area they are playing for teammate Zack Lannon who is battling cancer. This team is going to tough to push around this year.
