NMPreps - With under 70-Days until the first day of basketball we take a look at the NMPreps.com New Mexico Basketball All-State Teams. We will look at each classification and ending with Division All-State Teams as well.
FIRST TEAM ALL-STATE
Austen Drake, Hope Christian (Senior/Forward): One of the more talented forwards not only in the classification but Drake is also regarded as one of the finer forwards in New Mexico High School basketball. "He has great footwork and understands the game so well" One 3A head coach said. Drake will be a favorite for a Mr. Basketball candidate, 3A player of the year and leading the defending champs to their fourth title in five years.
Zach Tenorio, Sandia Prep (Senior/Point Guard): The second year starting point guard will be a huge bright spot for the Sundevils who will be going through a rebuilding type of season. Tenorio, a talented floor general will need to become more of a scoring threat for the Sundevils this season.
Hiram Gleason, Shiprock (Senior/Guard) : Gleason finally helped lead the Chieftains to the Final Four last season. The three-year starter will be one of the top players along with just an overall fun player to watch take the court. Super quick and smooth little guard at 5'7 that brings some top athleticism to the court.
Matthew Herrera, Pojoaque Valley (Senior/Guard): Has silently flown under the radar during his career and his name will only be known with wins coming the Elks way. They showed signs last season of getting back into the Top-8 of their classification and Herrera will be a major factor in the state this season.
Isaiah Dominguez, St. Michael's (Senior/Forward): A big part of the Horsemen run to the title game last season and truly had a good post season. Dominguez, flourish near the paint and finds himself in the right spot at the right time. "It always helps when your bigs finish at the rim and Dominguez does that" one coached said about Dominguez.
SECOND TEAM ALL-STATE
One name that could easily be placed among the first team by seasons end is the high energy shooting guard Brandon Zabala who impressed the NMPreps staff all of last season. Zabala plays intense defense and knocks down open jumpers.
Silver High School continues to improve each season and this season the captain to lead them deep into the playoffs and possibly reaching a Final Four is Derek Salas who had big games in high profile contests. Justin Flores the "other big man" for the Horsemen will create a dominating duo in the paint for head coach Ron Geyer.
Stephen Lennox is the silent giant for the Lovington Wildcats and will become a known name this season as the 6'8 forward is on the rise with a Lovington program on the rise. Estevan Garcia the guard for the Taos Tigers will be another name to the program that continues to produce top players and teams in 3A.
