Recruitment Of New Officials In The Area
The Albuquerque Metro Area is currently seeking new officials for the 2013-2014 basketball season. This is a huge opportunity to stay connected with the game of basketball along with giving back to the community. NMPreps.com sits down with an official to discuss the reason officials love the craft.
"Ideally, we would love to have at the very least 175 officials in the Metro Area." That is a prime number to call the many games that take place in a basketball season from the middle school level to the C-Team/JV games and Varsity level games.
When asked why someone should take the leap in becoming a sports official in the area. "Like I stated its a great way to stay in shape, allows you to have a new perspective on this great game, also a great way to have a positive impact on the environment of the game. We also view it as an extension of the classroom as we get to have a positive impact with players"

Following up with that, the official explained, "I don't know if there is any 'bad stereotypes' but in our association we have officials who work hard at the craft and look for ways to perfect the craft year-round. We, much like the athletes and coaches are around the game during the pre-season, regular season and at the tournaments." Officials are participating in clinics, AAU tournaments and other camps around the area and region. They also get to listen to guest speakers from all levels like the NCAA and NBA.
The game is evolving and so are the officials, "We are digging into video, meetings and attending nationally known clinics."
There is always something to learn and the approach that the officials are taking is to evolve with the game. "We have meeting and socials to get better." The officials have a hands-on approach with their profession. They watch film and continually try to develop younger (new) officials by have separate meeting with them along with officiating camps/clinics in which they will officiate scrimmages or tournaments.
Why You Should Become An Official
(Albuquerque, NM) - They glide the sidelines and almost simultaneously go with the aged quote "Damned if you do and damned if you don't". The two or three individuals during each contest who have a profound love for a craft that is ever evolving along with the sport that they officiate.
Today, I sit down with an official who has spent a good 17 years officiating the game that they love. Roaming the sidelines of the Albuquerque Metro Area as one of the veteran officials in the state of New Mexico. This official has also had the opportunity to call games at the Division II level in the region (NMHU/Rocky Mountain) and for the NMAA State Tournament.
"We love what we do" the official quickly explains. This is one of several questions asked when you try and figure out why someone would take part in this position. "Myself, it allows me to stay in shape, I've had the opportunity to call two state tournaments, worked at the Division II level, and what better what to give back to the community and kids. Along with having the best seat in the house!"
For the individual out there looking to become apart of something bigger than yourself and stay connected to your community along with the sport that you love this is the perfect situation for you. Over the last couple of years the decline in officials has dropped slightly to the fact of a group of veteran officials retiring and others leaving the state for other jobs. So, now is the opportunity for new individuals to take make the 'call' and become officials.
