Division: New Mexico Big School Division
Classifications: 5A - 3A
2013-2014 BreakdownOVERVIEW: The Warriors showed quality signs last season and featured some pieces that return for head coach Lawrence Baca who enters his fifth season. The Warriors averaged around 57 points per game with a young squad and could see those numbers rise now that most have experience. Also, they return Zeb Esquivel (SR/Guard) who missed last season with an injury that could have helped get the Warriors into the State Tournament at a lower seed.
If healthy, Zeb Esquivel will hope to return to form that he was as a rising sophomore. The Warriors run good sets on offense creating good options for shooters and have general been fueled by good guards. In the backcourt will also be sophomore Dominic Montoya who showed plenty of potential late last season and could be a rising name in the classification.FRONTCOURT:
The Warriors are generally fueled by a good bakccourt but are not shy when having decent size and quality big men at the 3A classification. Matthew Padilla had a good season making him an early look at with preseason nominations for District watch. He held his own last season and quietly moved to the top of the depth chart and will be on teams report this season.
The schedule for Socorro is normally favorable for an above .500 season with a feature of "must win" type games along with winnable games like any schedule should look. Sprinkle in a few tough 4A games like Belen, Valencia along with 3A powers St. Michaels and Sandia Prep fields a solid schedule. It isn't one of the toughest but among 3A schedules its around average.FORECAST/REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS:
Socorro is a well coached team and only two-years removed from the 2011 Final Four. They will take some losses but I could see them winning the games that they are "supposed" to win. They lost some head scratches last season but it was a learning processes type of season. I could see them (depending on the schedule that we haven't officially seen) go around .500 and challenge in the District Championship game. They have the potential to be a team that rises each week as they have talent to build off.
Comment/Vote: Socorro Warriors come in at No. 64
