Today the Publisher of NMPreps.com Kyle Henderson recaps Week 7.Hot Topics: Just Scores | Most Intriguing Scores | Week 7 Recap/Scores/Highlights
Intriguing Week 7 Outcomes
Let's start this this Week 7 Review with the intriguing scores from this weekend. Belen won the Chilie Roaster with a 32-13 win over Valencia Country Rival Los Lunas to get to 5-1 on the season and took a big step forward to becoming the District 6-4A Champ. (Highlights of that game here)
Also is 4A it was Farmington defeating Bloomfield 59-7. The score stands out because Bloomfield and Farmington were a combined 10-2 entering this game. The Scorpions did knock Bloomfield Running Back Adrian Vigil out of the game early, but posting 59 on the Bobcats is impressive.
Roswell is now 5-2 this season with a come from behind week 7 victory over Moriarty. The Coyotes won just 5 games total last year, so let's add first year Head Coach Jeff Lynn into the Coach of the Year discussion or better yet let's wait until their week 9 showdown with Artesia to see just how much they have improved. The Bulldogs are 2-5 on the year losing to Clovis 48-17 Friday Night.
Jumping to Class 5A District 2-5A went 2-0 against District 1-5A in some play-off shifting victories. Sandia handed Cleveland their first loss of the season 17-16 and Eldorado defeated Rio Rancho 35-21 thanks to 4 rushing touchdowns from Junior Quarterback Zach Gentry. Note: Cleveland and Rio Rancho entered this week a combined 10-1.
In Class 3A on Saturday the St. Michael's Horsemen improved to 7-0 this year and won their 20th in a row by defeating the Centennial Hawks 43-35. You can watch highlights of this game here. The Horsemen are open in week 8 before another home marquee game against Silver. Speaking of Silver, the Colts lost to Ruidoso Friday Night 31-28 in a game which is likely to elevate the Warriors to the No. 2 spot in our updated 3A rankings.
Jumping down to 2A District 2-2A is basically the little SEC. Clayton and Santa Rosa who each entered the weekend a combined 12-0 hard to fight for every inch against district rivals Estancia and Texico. Clayton moved to 7-0 with a 19-12 win over Estancia and Santa Rosa beat Texico 19-14 thanks to some last minute heroics from Ryan Lopez who returned a fumble for a touchdown.
In Class 1A Hagerman moved to 7-0 but they have not played in two-weeks as their last two opponents have literally gone belly up before the game. Mescalero forfeit last Friday and Cloudcroft did the same Friday Night. The 1A shocker this weekend was Ft. Sumner beating Escalante in OT 33-32.
Henderson's Week 7 District Rankings
Moving past the midway point of the season let's examine the District Favorites, here is my take after week 7
In Class 5A District 1-5A is as good a guess as you want to make it. It's a loaded district and this week Volcano Vista and Cibola went 2-0 while Rio Rancho and Cleveland went 0-2. Obviously this district is much more wide open than we originally thought. Volcano Vista just beat Mayfield, Cibola beat Sandia head to head earlier in the year, Sandia beat Cleveland, and Rio Rancho seems to be taking steps back weekly. District Rankings 1. Cleveland, 2. Here, 3. Here
District 2-5A's favorite is still Sandia this team has an incredible defense, but their offense really needs to turn it up if they want to make a serious run again. Their week 7 win over Cleveland tells me that they have enough talent this year to be the best from the North come play-off time. Eldorado's win over Rio Rancho is intriguing obviously, but they are still 3-3 this year. Premium Subscribers Can Continue Reading Here (Every District In New Mexico Added)
