Baseball: 3A Rankings Released
The New Mexico HIgh School Baseball Season has started and while we have released our 5A and 4A Rankings which you can view by clicking here, today we preview Class 3A, 2A, and 1A.
Leading off with 3A, Hope Christian Hopes To Repeat
It's no surprise with Hope Christian being the No. 1 ranked preseason team in Class 3A. The Huskies under Head Coach Sean Anthony went 26-4 last year and graduate just one senior from their 2013 roster. Incredible to say the least.
This year's group will again be headlined by Keenan Dodd who is committed to Eastern New Mexico John Jenson, Neppy Saavedra, and up and coming underclassmen like Joe Standley and Stone Romero. Huskies clearly have the targets on their back, but should be up for the challenge. Quest for back to back state titles starts now.
At the No. 2 spot is the St. Michael's Horsemen who return a great group into the 2014 season led by New Mexico Lobo Commit Matthew Smallwood who had a solid junior year on the mound. Also watch for Reyes Lujan and Michael Aranda.
No. 3 is Silver who won 19 games in 2013 under Head Coach Claudie Thompson. The Colts do graduate CP Thompson, but return Derek Salas a three sport star, Alex Holguin, and Shaur Martinez. It's going to be tough to sweep the district again, but the Colts could be around the same talent level as last year.
The Sandia Prep Sundevils are the No. 4 team in our rankings and even though they went 16-14 last year, Sandia Prep play a very tough schedule and nearly beat Hope Christian in the playoffs losing just 3-1. Sandia Prep returns Shawn Moore who had a big junior season at the plate and recently committed to play at NMMI. As usually the 3A Private Schools are loaded.
Best of the Rest
No. 5 Bloomfield - Returns a good amount of talent. They went 9-0 in district last year
No. 6 Ruidoso - The sleeper returns a great group again. Watch for Parker Johnson and Cade Patterson.
No. 7 Portales - Even though they are ranked below Ruidoso, you have to like their chances of winning the district.
No. 8 Lovington - Won 21 games last year. Graduate some big guns including Josh Gutierrez, David Robles, Josh Reyes, and Cesar Trevizo.
No. 9 Raton - The Tigers are led by Cam Baird and Caleb Wood each committed to play college baseball. Every once in a while, the Tiger baseball team makes a run.
No. 10 Socorro - The Warriors have had a tough year in boys sports, but the baseball season looks promising. The Warriors return Derrick Prieto who is one of the top pitchers in 3A.
