TEAM PROFILE - PIEDRA VISTA

NMP - How Are You Adjusting To Coaching At Piedra Vista?
Coach McGaha - It has been a good transition for me and my staff. We are enjoying the change very much so far.

NMP - Have Your Players Bought Into Your Program?
Coach McGaha- Only time will tell. Our style and expectations is completely different than what they have been used to. I think they are becoming believers in the weight room and arm care programs we have implemented and we have more numbers than ever before. I think I would make an objective assessment and say that we are making progress.

NMP Has There Been Any Uphill Battles?
Coach McGaha - Expectations are very high but investment was not adequate. We have worked very hard to break down the reasons Piedra Vista has not been able to get over the 1 game hump they have faced by way of FHS and AA in the state title games they had chances to play in.

NMP - What Is The 2010 Season Outlook For Your Team?
Coach McGaha - We have a good group of seniors returning that have experience, but they have really had to push themselves because our system is very different than what they were used to. I think that there are alot of people picking us at the top of the heap, but I thnk it is a bit premature. Volcano Vista gave us all we could handle last year and they have everything coming back. Artesia has a 10+ game winner coming back and actually became more athletic. Goddard has a great young group and Farmington will always be the team to beat, with 35 years of tradition on their side. We are very excited to see our kids develop over the year and come into their own but we have a long way to go.

NMP - What Are Your Team's Strengths?
Coach McGaha - I think that out team speed is actually our strength. we have a good stable of arms in the bullpen and we have some good sticks in the line-up but our team speed is very good. The slowest kid in the line-up will be a 7.5 (60 yd) runner in Jake McCasland. The rest of the kids in the line-up will run between 6.7- and 7.2 (60 yd) times. We should be able to cover some ground and be very agressive offensively on the bases.

NMP Areas That Need Improvement?
Coach McGaha - I believe that we just need to become more appreciative of the game from a team perspective. We have made a stong push to really make the group understand that in order to "believe in your heart" you have to "know in your mind". The two combined = discipline and confidence. Those two virtues are the key to the state titles I was blesseed to be a part of at FHS. This group is still learning how to put the mental and emotional part of the game together.

NMP - Seniors To Watch?
Jake McCasland, Tim Bailey, Damion Lovato, Brad Pate, Alex Scanlan, Brandon Johnson, and Tanner Cooper.

NMP - Underclassman On The rise?
Morgan McCasland, Shilo McCall, Shane Woodson, Dillon Bibo, Dominic Moreno, and Dominic Valdez.
