Week 12 Statewide Preview

Play-Off Preview Jump: Class 5A Preview | Class 4A Preview | Class 3A Preview | Small School Preview

#9 Eldorado (5-5) @ #8 Cibola (6-4) - Class 5A First Round Play-Off Game
Eldorado Eagle Preview
The Eldorado Eagles come into this game at (5-5) on the year and knowing that they already lost to Cibola in week three 27-13, they should be amped at a shot to take the Cougars in a Metro Area rematch. Eldorado has two good running backs in the mix (Gary Maestas/Marcus Dunning), but their underrated passing attack trio in quarterback Armin Day and receivers Tyler McCulloch and Nick Schnedar could be their key to success. Complete Team Report Here
Cibola Cougar Preview
The Cibola Cougars are coming off an overtime loss to the Rio Rancho Rams, a game that could have clinched the district from their 1-5A rival. This team is led by quarterback Hayden Schaap and and fullback/linebacker David Varges. The smash club is a very solid football and even though they have the edge against Eldorado, it's going to take a very good defensive effort to hold off the Eagles and company. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Cibola by 3 | Upset Alert: High

#12 Carlsbad (4-6) @ #5 Onate (8-2) - Class 5A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Carlsbad Cavemen Preview
The Carlsbad Cavemen were going to be a tough draw for any team come play-off time. The round one match up with Onate is interesting as Carlsbad a throwing team is paired up with the Black Knights, a team who's secondary proved to be suspect at times during the season. Jacob Galindo is their stud and he'll be running the show from the quarterback position. Complete Team Report Here
Cibola Cougar Preview
The Onate Black Knights are poised to make a run at the state title trophy and even though they felt that they should have landed up with a top four spot, the reality is a very good Carlsbad team is coming to town, a team that could give them match up problems. This defense is very solid, they might be the best I've seen against the run. A passing team could be their Achilles Heel and if Carlsbad was to get an early led, it could be a long night for the Black Knights. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Onate by 7 | Upset Alert: Low

#11 Hobbs (3-7) @ #6 Rio Ranho (7-3) - Class 5A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Hobbs Eagle Preview
The Hobbs Ealges head in to their round one match (3-7) and coming off a 30-0 loss to the Clovis Wildcats. The Eagles, get a rematch of week one where they lost to the Rams 42-27 at Waton Memorial Stadium. The Rams did allow 39 to Cibola, which is a similar style offense that Hobbs is going to bring to the table, but Hobbs also needs to bring their "A-Game" to the coverage department as Tyler Baker (Quarterback) and the Rams have been scoring over 40 points per game in their last few contests. Complete Team Report Here
Rio Rancho Rams Preview
The Rio Rancho Rams will play the Hobbs Eagles for the fourth time in three years this Friday night. Winning the last three, the Rams are the heavy favorite and if the Rams can pick apart the Hobbs secondary again, it should be a 14 to 21 point victory for the home team. They have a lot of momentum after their district tittle win and they want a shot to knock off La Cueva in the second round. First they need to stop the very talented Patrick Smith and the Hobbs Eagles, something I feel most of the state expects them to do. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Rio Rancho by 10 | Upset Alert: Low

#10 Sandia (5-5) @ #7 Las Cruces (7-3) - Class 5A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Sandia Matador Preview
The Sandia Matadors, the district runner up of district 2-5A have a bit of the "BIG MO" headed into this game against red hot Las Cruces. They are winners of their last four out of five and the offense has been clicking a lot better than the beginning of the season. As stated before several times on NMPreps, this team has some very talented athletes that play very well for Coach Kevin Barker. Don't write off the Matadors just yet. Remember, Onate had to come from behind in the final minutes to beat these guys and Onate beat Las Cruces 30-3. Complete Team Report Here
Las Cruces Bulldawg Preview
Who are these Las Cruces Bulldawgs? And which team is going to show up? If the team that lost to Onate shows up, Sandia could very well win this game. If the team that beat Manzano and Mayfield shows up, well then this game should be over by halftime. Jeremy Buurma and Jose Garcia proved to be a deadly combination last week and if they are still on fire, they'll give Sandia's defensive coordinator head aches all day long. Las Cruces is a very good team that I expect to advance to the next round. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Las Cruces by 10 | Upset Alert: Low

#9 Deming (7-3) @ #8 Bernalillo (7-3) - Class 4A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Deming Wildcat Preview
The Deming Wildcats choked yet again in their district championship game against Silver in a 30-14 loss to end the regular season. The Wildcats, rumored to be a good football team led by senior running back Daniel Padron head to Bernalillo a game they can certainly get the upset in. If the long drive does not take their momentum they'll keep it tight all the way through four quarters with the Spartans. Complete Team Report Here
Bernalillo Spartan Preview
Bernalillo will host their first ever home football play-off game in what you have to think will be an sell out crowd for the much improved 4A program. Senior quarterback Alan Favela has to have a good game throwing the football, Bernalillo has the sight edge in this one. On defense they must stop Daniel Padron. Padron, Deming's stud running back has ran for over 1,500-yards and accounted for well over 20 touchdowns on the year. Bernalillo better bring it in the first round. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Bernalillo by 1 | | Upset Alert: High

#12 St. Pius X (5-5) @ #5 Artesia (6-4) - Class 4A 1st Round Play-Off Game
St. Pius Sartan Preview
The St. Pius X Sartans are a better football team than they have showed in the last two weeks. Heading to Artesia this weekend, they have allowed 97 points in their last two games an area that needs to improve quickly if they do not want to be mercy ruled by halftime in the Bulldog Bowl. This team has play-makers and I would not count them out just yet. Madrid, Garcia, and Leon your team needs you. Complete Team Report Here
Artesia Bulldog Preview
Despite their (6-4) season record, this Artesia Bulldog team is a good one. They are your typical Artesia "Air It Out" team that can put 40 points on you in a hurry. They have been beaten up this year by some very good 5A teams, but that schedule of strength should prepare them for their uphill climb in the play-offs. Artesia is tough to beat at home and I can't remember when the last time was when they dropped two straight in front of the Sea Of Orange. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Artesia by 10 | | Upset Alert: Low

#11 Valencia (5-5) @ #6 Silver (8-2) - Class 4A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Valencia Jaguar Preview
The Jag's 2009 season was vastly improved from a year ago and if you follow football up close like most of our NMPreps fans do, you'll know that Valencia is going to keep it close with Silver this weekend. The Jags have a very good rushing game and if Juan Rodriguez has another "Player of the Week" performance, the Jags could pull out the upset down in Silver City, a very tough place to play. Can they really do it? Complete Team Report Here
Silver Fighting Colt Preview
The Silver Colts ended the year only being beat by Farmington and Onate. This team led by some of the best unknown running backs in the business is very good and playing at home in November, Silver is going to be very tough to beat. If they can slow down Valencia's running attack and gain the lead early, they should win by more than 10 this weekend. One thing they cannot do is take Valencia lightly. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Silver by 7 | | Upset Alert: Medium

#10 Farmington (6-4) @ #7 Del Norte (5-5) - Class 4A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Farmington Scorpion Preview
You know that when the 4A seedings were posted both Farmington and Del Norte were excited to get a rematch. Farmington playing like one of the better overall teams in 4A as of late did drop this regular season match up to the Knights 21-14. Lately it's been the Tyler Hough show and most people across the state expect Gary Bradley's new and improved Scorpions to win this game. Farmington is a very good football team. Complete Team Report Here
Del Norte Knight Preview
The Knights might be a .500 level club, but they are district champs and winner of their last two games. They knocked off Moriarty by four and beat Valencia by one point the week before in over time. It seems as though this team is on the verge of being knocked off themselves, but they have stayed alive for one more round. I think this game will be like the 2008 play-off game against Piedra Vista. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Silver by 7 | | Upset Alert: High

#9 Portales (3-7) @ #8 Hatch (7-3) - Class 3A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Portales Ram Preview
Don't be fooled with the Portales Rams (3-7) record, they are a good football team that can score points and play with anybody in their class. They played a brutal non-district schedule and they have one of the best running backs in all of class 3A. They have been inconsistent in most games, however they are not to be taken lightly. Complete Team Report Here
Hatch Bears Preview
The Hatch Bears had a quiet much improved 2009 season and were only one game away from knocking off Socorro for the district title. The Bears have some quality wins under their belt and when quarterback Estevan Varela is hot, the Bears are tough to beat. They'll have their work cut out for them against Portales this weekend. Expect another scoring frenzy. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Hatch by 7| | Upset Alert: High

#12 Pojoaque (6-4) @ #5 Academy (8-2) - Class 3A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Pojoaque Elks Preview
The Pojoaque Elks with a (6-4) season record were the last team to make the play-offs and heading into this match up with Academy it's going to be a bumpy ride. The Elks are led by athlete/quarterback Michael Garcia who has put up some very good numbers on the year. Question is how good is their defense? Academy hung more than 60 on Portales last week. Complete Team Report Here
Academy Chargers Preview
The Chargers are rolling right now and whether they were a top four seed our a number fiver or six, one thing is for sure, they are a very good football team that can really make a run at the state title trophy. Their dangerous duo in Kevin Class and Brandon Bracn has almost accounted for 3,000 total yards and they are not done yet. They should get past Pojoaque without any problems. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Academy by 21 | | Upset Alert: Very Low

#11 Cobre (4-6) @ #6 Robertson (7-3) - Class 3A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Cobre Indians Preview
The Cobre Indians will make the long drive up I-25 to face off with the flying high Robertson Cardinals, a team nobody wants to play right now. We don't much about Cobre, but we do know that boys from the southwest region bring it and with a running back/linebacker like Nick Madrid on the team, Cobre will be tough to beat in round one. Complete Team Report Here
Robertson Cardinals Preview
The Robertson Cardinals rolled through their inner city rival the West Las Vegas Dons in the last regular season game of the year and now prepare for the Cobre Indians in round one. You know Robertson is licking their chops at getting another shot at Socorro, who took that top four seed away from them. One game at a time. Their are not too many high profile names on this Robertson team, rather a group that plays as one. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: Robertson by 10 | Upset Alert: Low

#10 Hot Springs (3-7) @ #7 St. Michael's (7-3) - Class 3A 1st Round Play-Off Game
Hot Springs Tigers Preview
Hot Springs made the class 3A play-offs with their key district win over Cobre back in week 10. They played well against Hatch in week 11, but came up short in a six point loss. This week they make the trip up I-25 to face off with the Horsemen on Saturday for what will be a game they enter in as the 14 point underdogs. Hot Springs has been banged up all year, but they are very well coached, so they'll be ready to go. Complete Team Report Here
St. Michael's Horsemen Preview
The Horsemen have not played up to their standards in the last few games and if they don't turn it around soon, they could be on the outside looking in a hurry. This week, they should be able to muscle past Hot Springs and they'll need to get their offense in order as Raton is eagerly awaiting a rematch in week 13. Pick it up Horsemen. Complete Team Report Here
Hendo's Favorite: St. Michael's by 14 | Upset Alert: Very Low

# 8 Eunice @ # 1 Tularosa - Class 2A Quarterfinal Play-Off Game
Eunice Cardinal Preview
The Eunice Cardinals knocked off the Newcomb Skyhawks in round one and now head to Tularosa to face the number one seeded team in class 2A. Led by Uly Lozano who has over 1,203-yards and 25 total touchdowns, this team has the athletes to keep up with anyone. If underclassmen Tyler Almager stays composed in the pocket, Eunice will keep this game close.
Tularosa Wildcat Preview
The Tularosa Wildcats head into this game at (7-2) on the year and already have a 35-0 win over Eunice under their belt. This team is full of big time play-makers like Nick Saenza, Emery Coleman, Sam Sanchez, and Levi Silva. If they come out hot, it will be tough to stop this very talented bunch.
Hendo's Favorite: Tularosa by more than 10 | Upset Alert: Low

#5 Estancia @ #4 Texico - Class 2A Quarterfinal Play-Off Game
Estancia Bear Preview
The Estancia Bears were less than five points away from beating Texico in the last regular season game a few weeks back. This team barley survived their first round play-off game against NMMI and will need a better overall performance if they want to pull off the upset this weekend. This is a big test for Head Coach Dusty Giles.
Texico Wolverine Preview
The Wolverines were banged up at the end of the year, so landing that first round bye really helped their team lick and heel their wounds before this 2A battle. This group is no where as good as they were last season, but they have Seth Bailey leading the team and his play could be the difference in a key game for first year Head Coach Ryan Autrey.
Hendo's Favorite: Texico by 7 | Upset Alert: Medium

#6 Capitan @ #3 Lordsburg - Class 2A Quarterfinal Play-Off Game
Capitan Tiger Preview
The Capitan Tigers cruised past Laguna Acoma in the first round, getting big play from their game breaker at running back Christian Quiroz. This weekend, they are 14 point underdogs as they take on district rival Lordsburg for the second time this season. They lost 41-6 in their first match up with Lordsburg. They better have a game plan this time.
Lordsburg Maverick Preview
Lordsburg has had two weeks to think about their only loss this season, which took place two weeks again in a thriller loss at home to Tularosa. They are locked and loaded and should win this game with ease. Lordsburg will show why they are very dangerous in a big win against Capitan. Statewide statement expected from this game.
Hendo's Favorite: Lordsburg by 14 | Upset Alert: Very Low

#7 Dexter @ #2 Santa Rosa - Class 2A Quarterfinal Play-Off Game
Dexter Demon Preview
The Dexter Demons have won four straight after starting off the season (0-7). Big plays from Daniel Fuller, the NMPreps.com District 4-2A MVP have propelled this team in their last four games, but they'll need a team effort if they want to beat the Lions in Santa Rosa. This is a very difficult task in front of them.
Santa Rosa Lion Preview
The Santa Rosa Lions are set to go on their annual state title run and it starts tonight against Dexter. The Lions are very good in all-areas and if junior running back Jason Martinez is on, Santa Rosa could turn this into a blow out.
Hendo's Favorite: Santa Rosa by 10 | Upset Alert: Very Low

Sixman, Eightman, and Class 1A Quick Hits

6-Man State Title Game - Hondo @ Lake Arthur (Sat. Nov. 14th @ Lake Arthur) *5:00PM
Hendo's Pick: Hondo beat these bad Panthers before and they'll have to have another monster effort to do it again. The over/under will be more than 100 points and only a touchdown should separate the two in the end. I take Hondo in a thrilling first title game.

8-Man Semifinals - Melrose @ Mountainair (Fri. Nov. 13th @ Mountainair) *7:00PM
Hendo's Pick: I talked with Mario Martinez from the NMAA about this Melrose team and he said the Buffs might be a tad better than last season. That is just crazy. I take Melrose is a route.

8-Man Semifinals - Tatum @ Clovis Christian (Sat. Nov. 14th @ Yucca Jr. High Clovis) *1:00PM
Hendo's Pick: I picked Clovis Christian to get past round one in the 8-Man play-offs, but I think Gary Durham has too good of a team and the Coyotes will knock off Clovis Christian in front of 200-fans at Yucca Mid High.

Class 1A Semifinals - Jal @ Clayton (Sat. Nov. 14th @ Clayton) *1:00PM
Hendo's Pick: Jal makes it second back-to-back 300 mile plus drive and even though I thought about picking Jal, I think Samuel Overmyer and the Yellow Jackets get past the Panthers in a tight ball game.

Class 1A Semifinals - Ft. Sumner @ Hagerman (Fri. Nov. 13th @ Hagerman) *7:00PM
Hendo's Pick: Ft. Sumner's fantastic class 1A run will come to an end this weekend as they take on a very good Hagerman Bobcats team Friday night. Hagerman is playing so well right now, they could win by two touchdowns or more.
