I. Three Must See: No. 3 Las Cruces vs. Montwood (TX)

When: Tuesday, Nov. 13
Time: 7:15 PM
Where: Montwood High School, El Paso, TX
The Bulldawgs of Las Cruces High come into the 2012-2013 season ranked number three in the land of New Mexico (NMPreps.com Top 25). They will look to avenge a, 56-52, loss on opening night last season. Montwood High School (El Paso, TX) has some New Mexico connections as Tony Harper is the brother of Gadsden head coach, Michael Harper. The Dawgs are a must see team this season as they feature 11 players from last seasons (24-5) team. The game is evenly matched size wise but the Dawgs could have the edge as Kai Williams and Trevor Noel will both be better and stronger post presence. My game changer though is sweet shooting guard Joe Garza who, if given the right, can score all night on Montwood (TX). The Dawgs will need to push the ball and tempo because Montwood (TX) will love to slow it down.
Grine's Pick: Dawgs +7
Grine's Game Changer: Joe Garza

No. 3 Las Cruces vs. Franklin High School (TX)
When: Friday, Nov. 16
Time: 7:15 PM
Where: Franklin High School, El Paso, TX
Franklin High School was another close fight last season before the Dawgs pulled out a one point win. Franklin will match up with Las Cruces in this one as both return a frontcourt worthy of noting. Defensively, I think the Dawgs will be better as they have bigs who are good with the ball and have solid footwork.
Grine's Pick: Dawgs +2.3
Grine's Game Changer: Trevor Noel & Kai Williams

Mayfield vs. Montwood High School (TX)
When: Friday, Nov. 16
Time: 7:15 PM
Where: Montwood High School, El Paso, TX
Montwood will host a pair of Las Cruces area schools when Mayfield heads to town on the 16th. The game will feature much of the same game type and it will become a chess match. The Trojans will be a major rebuilding program this season but it's a "Three Must See", for me because Tommy Morrow loves when his team comes in unnoticed. The Trojans return only two from last season and will look to start a new phase.
Grine's Pick: Trojans +1

II. Player Intros: Joseph Garza, Las Cruces

1. Joseph Garza, the Las Cruces Bulldawgs point guard, not only sees the floor well he can stroke consistently. In game this week he should have some freedom to make plays and if they allow him, he can go off each night.

2. Rodney Anderson, Onate Knights: Anderson will look to continue his late season success in the opening week as the Knights just outside the Top-25 are looking to climb in early in the season. Onate opens this week with four games, that includes the El Paso Tournament starting on the 15th.

3. Kai Williams, Las Cruces: Kai Williams is an early preseason candidate for the 2013 Mr. Basketball Award, given to the top player in New Mexico. Williams looks to start the Dawgs off on the right foot his senior year and I think he could become a nightly double-double player.
