I. Team of the Night: No. 6 Hobbs Eagles

No. 6 Hobbs (1-0) 86, Odessa (TX) 83 - (2OT)
The The Eagles were absolutely crushing Odessa by 21 points behind Dane Pannell's, opening night, double-double finishing with 33 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles open the season with a win and look to build off a trip to the 2012 State Tournament Elite Eight. Untitled Document

This is the second consecutive opening night double-double for Pannell who started last season with one. Pannell, had help from Adrian Sanchez last night a new name in the Eagles backcourt who had five-three's for 20 points.

II. More Teams That, "Did Work"

Mayfield (1-0): The unranked Trojans went into East Lake (TX) a bit of an underdog having no returning starters and only two returning players on the varsity from a year ago and came out big winners with a 55-53 win on the road. It's a big win for the Trojans. Off the bench was sophomore Daniel Munoz who had a game high 18 points.

Onate (1-0): The Knights of Onate come in right outside the NMPreps.com Top-25, but made a case after stomping Socorro High School (TX), 60-34. Rodney Anderson led the Knights with 14 points, 2 rebounds and 3assists. Daemund McCants contributed with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.


III. Player of the Night: Dane Pannell, Hobbs

For the second opening night, Dane Pannell is our player of the night after pumping his chest to a double-double. Pannell who did it last year on opening night had a double-double with 33 points and 11 rebounds.

The senior who is being recruited by several D-1 schools, also made the list of 25 preseason candidates for the NMPreps.com 2013 Mr. Basketball Award. Pannell, was a finalist last season.

The Eagles ranked No. 6 in the NMPreps.com Top 25 look to continue it's success this week with a game against a powerful Permian (TX) team on Friday.

Other Key Performances

Trevor Noel, Las Cruces: Noel had 24 points in the opening night for the Bulldawgs.
Adrian Sanchez, Hobbs: Sanchez went off for 5-threes on a 20-point night.
Daniel Munoz, Mayfield: The sophomore guard came off the bench for a big night of 18 points.
Rodney Anderson, Onate: Anderson starts off the season, how he ended it, with a solid performance of 14 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists.
Daemund McCants, Onate: McCants starts the season with a bang on 13 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists.

Hobbs 86, Odessa TX 83 2OT
The Hobbs Eagles moved to 1-0 on the season with an amazing opening game against Odessa, Texas that went into double overtime. On the night, the Eagles were led by Dane Pannell who scored 33 points and had 11 rebounds.

EP Montwood 58, Las Cruces 55
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs fell to El Paso Montwood during their first game of the season by just three points.

Onate 60, EP Socorro 34
The Onate Knights moved to 1-0 with a double digit win over EP Socorro.

Mayfield 55, EP Eastlake 53
Head Basketball Coach Tommy Morrow and the Mayfield Trojans pulled out a gusty win over Eastlake Friday Night. Trojans are now 1-0 this year.

Girls | Hoops Scoreboard

Mayfield 57, EP Chapin 50
The Mayfield Trojans trailed by more than 15 points with less than five minutes to play, but rallied back for their first win of the 2012 season.

Las Cruces 39, EP Coronado 35
The Las Cruces Lady Bulldawgs opened the season with a big win over El Paso Coronado Tuesday night thanks to a great effort from Kayla Sparks and Frazloa.

Onate 42, EP Parkland 28
The Knights opened the season with a "W" thanks to 18 pints and five 3-pointers from Kelsee Rosales.

Gadsden 50, Centennial 46
