New Mexico High School Football Play-Offs

Awards Week is coming on NMPreps.com. From the NMPreps.com Mr. Football Award Powered by Defined Fitness, to our 2012 All-State Selections, and to our very popular Top 250 Prospect Rankings, there is still a ton of coverage left for the 2012 Prep Football Season. Here is a quick look at the week 13 quarterfinal match ups.

Class 5A Quarterfinal Match Ups | Brackets

Class 5A First Round Recap

The Mayfield Trojans survived a shootout with the Manzano Monarchs to win 35-28 which moves the Trojans record to 7-4 on the season. On the night, the Mayfield Trojans were led by Marcus Inglemon, Kavika Johnson, and Isaah Lerman who had two interceptions, one of a pick six. The Clovis Wildcats defeated the Atrisco Heritage Jaguars 47-21 and you guessed it, Clovis Junior Running Back Kamal Cass ran for 300-yards and five touchdowns.

Volcano Vista survived against Valley in a minor upset with a 28-27 win, for their first 5A play-off win in school history. Sophomore Dominico Chavez came up big in the second half. The Eldorado Eagles outscored the Cleveland Storm 21-6 in the second half for the upset of the week.

Eldorado took a 28-20 lead when Defensive Back Jonah Mestas returned a interception for a score. Cleveland answered back with a late touchdown pass from Kian Homme, but the two point conversion which would of tied the game was missed due to a botched snap.

#9 Volcano Vista (6-5) @ #1 Rio Rancho (9-1)
The two met earlier in the year with Rio Rancho winning a wild one 37-34 after a late touchdown pass from Easton Bruere to Tristen Foley with just 10 seconds to play. Rio Rancho has won seven in a row in is a perfect 8-0 against 5A teams this season.

#5 Mayfield (7-4) @ #5 Sandia (7-3)
This is the first time these two have met in the play-offs since that infamous 2006 semifinal game where Mayfield beat Sandia on a goal line stand at the Field of Dreams. If anyone knows who to win the play-offs it's of course Mayfield, if anyone has something to prove in the play-offs it's Sandia.

#11 Eldorado (5-5) @ #3 La Cueva (9-1)
The two met earlier in the year and it was a 35-27 victory for the La Cueva Bears in a game which the controlled from kick-off. What makes this game interesting: The two are Northeast Heights Rivals and Eldorado is the most dangerous #11 seed we have ever had in the play-offs.

#7 Clovis (6-5) @ #2 Las Cruces (8-1)
They say Clovis gets better and better by year's end and that saying once again holds true as the Wildcats have won four in a row. We know what they are going to do: pound the rock with Kamal Cass, question is can Las Cruces contain the NMPreps.com Mr. Football Candidate. The Bulldawgs have won six in a row including their 36-13 win over Mayfield last weekend.

Class 4A Quarterfinal Match Ups | Brackets

Class 4A First Round Recap

The Deming Wildcats moved to 9-2, yes 9-2 on the season with 36-0 shutout against the Roswell Coyotes. On the night, the Wildcats were led by Running Back Ismael Garrett and the play of Sophomore Quarterback David Padron.

The Moriarty Pintos have won six in a row now with their impressive 45-20 win over Farmington. Bobby Tapia had a solid game at linebacker and Justin Manning did the work on the offensive side of the football for the Pintos who are now 8-3 this season.

Piedra Vista blasted the St. Pius X Sartans Friday Night by 46 points thanks to a wonderful performance from Senior Bryson Martinez who caught for 90-yards, ran for 90-yards, and scored a total of three touchdowns. Piedra Vista is now 10-2 heading into the quarterfinals.

The Aztec Tigers were also big winners in week 12 beating Santa Fe 64-13. On the night, Adam Lucero threw for 332-yards and four touchdown passes.

#8 Moriarty (8-3) @ #1 Goddard (9-0)
Moriarty has won six games in a row and has been scoring 49.1 points per game in those six consecutive wins. They get to test their offensive potency against Goddard, a team that is giving up just 9.7 points per game and who has won 9-0, including a 21-17 win over the #1 Seeded Rio Rancho Rams in Class 5A.

#5 Deming (9-2) @ #4 Belen (8-2)
The Deming Wildcats have won seven games in a row and have to be eager about another shot at Belen. These two teams met earlier in the year and it was 14-7 Belen coming away with the win. The Eagles have won four in a row and have been rolling in their last four games winning by a combined score of 208-46.

#6 Aztec (6-4) @ #3 Artesia (8-2)
A rematch of the 2010 4A State Title Game and a game that features two of the top 4A teams in New Mexico over the last 10-years. Aztec is the defending Class 4A Champ and has won their last five out of six games. The Bulldogs have not been 8-2 in several, several seasons and have played a gauntlet of a schedule. Aztec goes into this game as a 10 point underdog because of the Bulldog Bowl.

#7 Piedra Vista (8-2) @ #2 Los Lunas (10-0)
We finally get to see this match up unfold and see how good this Piedra Vista team really is. The Panthers are just 3-2 in their last five games and if they don;'t play perfect, it is going to be tough to stay on the same level as Los Lunas. The Tigers a top five team in New Mexico has been on a season tear that is memorable. The Tigers have outscored the competition this year by a combined 432-52.

Class 3A Quarterfinal Match Ups | Brackets

Class 3A First Round Recap

The Hope Christian Huskies seem to of finally found their late season mojo and better late than never. Hope took St. Mike's down to the wire just two weeks ago in a 12-7 slugfest and this week poured it on Taos winning 50-0. The Huskies have been led all season by TNT duo Sam White who has 16 sacks and Jon Millar, the best defensive linemen you don't know about.

The Lovington Wildcats shutout Pojoaque 36-0 to advance to the Quarterfinal Round to meet up with Bloomfield. Lovington Running Back Justin Bromley and Quarterback David Robles led the charge for the Wildcats, aka the Three Time Defending Class 3A Football State Champs.

The Robertson Cardinals trailed 14-0 to Portales, but rebounded to win 40-26 with an impressive second half effort to propel the Cardinals into the quarterfinal round. Robertson has won their last six out of seven games this year.

The Academy Chargers pulled off a giant week 12 upset with a 10 point win over Socorro. The Chargers who had lost to Socrro back in week 11 17-8, rebounded nicely in round one. Academy is now 4-6 on the season, never count out of the old school ways of Coach Kevin Carroll.

#9 Hope (5-6) @ #1 St. Michael's (10-0)
This is the fourth time these two teams have met since the 2011 season, with the Horsemen winning all three match ups. Hope Christian has played 11 play-off teams this season, think they are battle tested. The Horsemen are 10-0 and have outscored opponents this year by a combined 459-60. This loaded group has the talent to completely run the tables in the Class 3A Play-Offs.

#5 Lovington (4-6) @ #4 Bloomfield (6-4)
We say it all the time, the reason Lovington is Lovington is because of the fact that they play teams like Goddard and Artesia each regular season, so come play-off time there really is nothing they have not seen before. Don't count this group off just yet. Bloomfield is coming off a four game winning streak against some pretty weak competition. Could be a close game due to the fact that Bloomfield has had time to heel any season wounds from their very light last few weeks.

#6 Robertson (7-4) @ #1 Ruidoso (9-1)
These two teams met a few weeks back and it was a thrilling with Ruidoso escaping in a 26-21 victory. Robertson has won their last six out of seven games and though it's a tough travel trip, Robertson is playing very good right now. Ruidoso beat Portales 47-0 a few weeks back and also beat Lovington 23-0 in the final week of the regular season. Looks like Ruidoso is ready to make a real run at the tittle.

#11 Academy (4-6) @ #2 Silver (8-2)
Academy as mentioned is coming off a 34-24 win over Socorro and while on paper this game looks to be all Silver, that is what we thought about the Academy vs. Socorro game. If Academy can play ball control they have a slight shot. Silver beat Socorro a few weeks back 42-14 and Silver's only two season losses come against teams that are a combined (19-2). This team is scary good and very physical.

Class 2A Quarterfinal Match Ups | Brackets

Class 2A First Round Recap

The Lordsburg Mavericks picked up the tough road trip win over the Laguna Acoma Hawks thanks to an impressive performance from Wendell Hayes at running back. Lordsburg moves to 6-5 on the season.

Tucumcari beat up on Mesilla Valley 45-0 in a game that was never close. The Rattlers were missing Running Back Zach Hurd, but the defense showed up in a big way causing over five turnovers.

Dexter dominated Ramah to move to 7-4 on the season. The Demon's defense has been stellar all year allowing just 13.7 points per game.

Clayton rolled past Navajo Prep at home on Saturday to move to 7-4 this season under first year head coach Ken Robinson.

#9 Lordsburg (6-5) @ #1 Santa Rosa (10-0)
Lordsburg has to make the tough trip to Santa Rosa and they better bring a ton of offensive as they are going to need more than 30 to beat Santa Rosa, good news is Lordsburg's offense has scored close to 300 points this season thanks to prime time running back Wendell Hayes. Santa Rosa, the hands down favorite to win it all has outscored the comp this year 454-69. Really nothing else to say as the numbers speak for themselves.

#5 Tucumcari (8-3) @ #4 Hatch Valley (7-3)
Two teams with good size and speed will meet in Hatch for pound for pound one of the best match ups taking place this weekend. Tucumcari's defense needs to create turnovers again this weekend and needs to find a way to contain Hatch Superstar Chase Carson. Let's compare scores: Tucumcari beat Mesilla Valley 45-0, Hatch beat Mesilla Valley 46-6. That is how comparable these two teams are.

#6 Dexter (7-4) @ #3 Texico (8-1)
Old school football. Dexter is going to bring big defense to the table and Texico is going to run right at you. These two teams met earlier in the year with Teixco winning 12-0. Watch for Texico Running Back Shay Harrison who has ran for over 1,700-yards this season.

#7 Clayton (7-4) @ #2 Tularosa (8-2)
Defense vs. Offense. It's that simple. Clayton has the size up front to stop the run, but their secondary will be tested this weekend as the Wildcats have D-1 Prospect Jim Coleman at receiver. Clayton is 0-4 against play-off teams this year, Tularosa is a perfect 6-0 against 2A comp. Tough trip for Clayton, they better get off the bus ready to go.
