Pannell said of winning the award, "Well it's an honor, I've put a lot of hard work in the off-season and finally playing healthy. I fell like it's paying off."

Pannell, on opening night exploded for 33 points and 11 rebounds putting up his first double-double on the season. The Eagles went on to beat Odessa High School in the opening game.

On Friday, Dane Pannell pumped his chest in the second half of the close-game against Permian High School. After only scoring four points in the first half, Pannell was a main ingredient to the Eagles pulling out the three point win. Pannell finished the night with 15 points.

"I'm happy sitting at, 2-0, but as a team we're not worried about winning, just doing the little things right and continuing to get better" Pannell explained about the Eagles start.

The Eagles, now ranked No. 3 in the NMPreps.com Top 25 made the leap into the Top-3 after being ranked No. 6 during week one of the season. The Eagles are not in action during week two of the season and will resume play after the Thanksgiving holiday, in week three.

Voting is usually low numbers during the early weeks of the basketball season and we had a four way tie for runner-up in week two.

All nominees are worthy of the player of the week award and when things pick up around the state they could pick up votes again. With 20-weeks in the basketball season we are sure to see plenty of these names again. Two notable names are Daemund McCants (Onate) and Trevor Noel (Las Cruces). Both players opened up the season with impressive starts.

McCants led the Knights to a (3-1) start to the season along with a runner-up trophy at the El Paso High School tournament.

Noel, opened the season with a 24 points performance in a losing affair. Making it three from the Las Cruces area is a new name out there in Daniel Munoz, a sophomore guard for Mayfield (1-1) who hit the scene, most notably, with a 18 point performance off the bench in the Trojans win over East Lake (TX).
