Week Seven: Saturday Night Recap

Manzano 64, Hope Christian 54 : The Manzano Monarchs and the Hope Christian Huskies faced off in the championship round of the John Sapien Holiday Hoops Classic on Saturday night, in a matchup that featured to of the metro areas hottest holiday teams. The Huskies came out aggressive in the first quarter and lead at the half 32-26. The success the Huskies enjoyed in the 2nd 1st was short lived as the Monarchs were able to come out in the 2nd half and use their length and athleticism to their advantage to inevitably take control of the game in the 4th quarter, a lead they would not squander as they move on to be crowned tournament champions. Micah Murphy lead the way offensively for the Huskies with 14 points. Leading the way for Manzano was Warren Smith with a game high 23 points and Jarrell Harper who also chipped in 17 points of his own.
Los Lunas 49, Bosque Prep 38: The Los Lunas Tigers took on Bosque Prep in the Village of Los Lunas Holiday Classic championship round. Los Lunas was able to walk away the Tournament champions following an impressive victory of Bosque School who is now 7-3 after the loss. Los Lunas improves to 6-3 on the year. Despite the loss Austin Rivera led Bosque School with a game high 20 points. Leading the way for the Tigers was Ben Romero who had a team high 17 points.
Sandia Prep 47, Centennial 46: The Sandia Prep Sundevils took on the Centennial Hawks in a third place matchup of some quality programs. Sandia prep was able to hang on to the win in the closing seconds despite the last second efforts of Centennial who missed a game winning layup to seal the deal for Sandia Prep and cap off a successful tournament for the Sundevils.
Rio Rancho 54, Espanola Valley 50 The Rio Rancho Rams took on the Espanola Valley Sundevils in the Consolation round of the John Sapien Holiday Hoops Classic. The Rams were able to seal the deal in the closing moment of the game but saw the Sundevils give them everything they had in another close battle for the two teams. Leading the way for the Rams was Josh Lucero who had 22 points.
Albuquerque High 53, El Paso Cathedral 48 : The Albuquerque High Bulldogs took on El Paso Cathedral on Saturday as the two teams would be set to do battle, and it was the Bulldogs who would pass the test as they would win on the road in Clovis against a tough opponent. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Mahlik Sims who had 12 points and 12 assists on the night, also chipping in for the Bulldogs was James Croasdell who had 15 rebounds on the night.
Capital 58, Phoenix Central 53,: The Capital Jaguars and the Phoenix Central Bobcats did battle in the Championship round of the the Stu Clark invitational on Saturday in Las Vegas New Mexico. The Jaguars and Bobcats would engage in a closely contested matchup throughout the duration of the game and the Jaguars would come away victorious. Capital improves to 11-1 on the year and now they have the title of Tournament champions to add to their resume. Leading the way for the Jaguars was Christian Martinez who had a game high 23 points and Mikey Lopez who had 17 points of his own.
Pecos 101, Mora 62 : The Pecos Panthers took on the Mora Rangers in one of Northern New Mexico's oldest and fiercest rivalries, but on this day the Panthers will have a bit more then just bragging rights to add to the accomplishments they picked up during the Tri-Cities Invitational, they will also have the title of Tournament champions, following a 101-62 drubbing of the Rangers. Pecos is now 8-1 on the year and looking like one of the top dogs in 2A, Saturdays night final is a true measure to what 1st year head coach Russ Gilmore has been able to do with and already developed team. Leading the way for the Panthers was Darren DeHerrera who had a team high 25 points, Brandon Quintana with 24 points and Johnny Vigil with 22 points.
