NMPreps.com's Class 3A pre-season rankings: #6-#10
#6 raton tigers
Buzz: The Raton Tigers were defeated by Cobre in the quarterfinals of the 3A play-offs in 2012. Over the last three years, Raton has fielded some very high quality teams, however they have not had that magically season the Raton Faithful has been hoping for in several seasons. Once again their roster has some impact players including: Cam Baird, Ethan Washburn, Seth Parker, Dylan Query, and Dante Muleta. Washburn should see plenty of time on the bump and watch for Parker and Baird to have breakout seasons. This team gets as far as they want to. Still a year away, but overall it's hard not to get excited about this year's team.
#7 ruidoso warriors
Buzz: As the No. 8 seed in the Class 3A play-offs during the 2012 season, the Ruidoso Warriors were defeated by Silver in the first round. Another team in the pre-season top 10 rankings that has had talent, but seem to crumble when it's crunch time. They lose some very good talent on the mound and currently, all we know as far as top players returning is Brendon O'Connor. Ruidoso might take some losses early in the season, but it's too early to completely throw this quality program out of the top 10. For now, let's label them a mystery team.
#8 silver fighting colts
Buzz: Ranked right behind the team they beat in the Class 3A play-offs during the 2012 season, Silver losses some very good talent to graduation and it will be interesting to see if they can push through to the final four in 2013. Last year they were beaten badly by St. Michael's in the quarterfinals losing 13-1. When looking at the pre-season teams, you tend to forget about Silver because of their regional location, however Silver has proven that they are a top sports program since their recent jump down to Class 3A. Names to watch for this season would be a great help to our staff, so please e-mail us at nmpreps@yahoo.com.
#9 robertson cardinals
Buzz: The Cardinals are the spoiler in the baseball scene this season. They lose some seniors, but return the big bat of Ryan Tafoya who hit seven home runs as a junior. Robertson beat Pojoaque in the first round of the 2012 play-offs only to fall to the 3A State Champ Portales in the quarterfinals 8-4. Clearly early to say if they have enough power to overthrow the Raton Tigers (our district favorite) but this is certain: Robertson is going to heat up late in the season and be a tough squad to put away. Don't forget about them.
#10 lovington wildcats
Buzz: Sitting at the No. 10 spot in the pre-season rankings are the Lovington Wildcats. The Wildcats were beaten by the Sandia Prep Sundevils in round one of the New Mexico High School Play-Offs back in 2012. They return Luis Carrillo who is a Sophomore, along with David Robles who was productive as a Sophomore last year, but other than that we are lacking Lovington Wildcat info. As always, please help us with names to watch for the 2013 season. E-mail Publisher Kyle Henderson at nmpreps@yahoo.com.
