Week Thirteen: Saturday was on the mellow side compared to the rest of the week but still some headlines you want to know about.

Grine: Lessons Learned

We have some more confusion in 3A: I was criticized when I said 3A basketball wouldn't be the same. Well, let me run this down real quick. Sandia Prep loses to Roberston a team ranked in the lower tier of the classification and division (5A-3A). Then Prep turns around and beats St. Michael's who just Hope Christian. Hope Christian was the number one ranked in 3A. March could get interesting.

2. New candidate for Coach of the Year: The Espanola Valley Sundevils couldn't have been more devastated last week when they lost big man John Cotton. Well, the Sundevils led by head coach Richard Martinez continue to move along without missing a beat. They win again over Santa Fe, two days after topping, then, District 2-4A leader Bernalillo. Not to mention the leading scorers have been underclassmen - Thursday a freshman and Saturday a sophomore led. Jared Garduno led with 18.

3. We are not forgetting about you: The pop quiz was - who was the first team to win 20-games once again? Well, the 1A Cliff Cowboys led by one of New Mexico's most legendary coaches Pete Shock has his Cowboys 21-1 on the season. The Cowboys a 1A school played against a Big School Division team in 3A Hot Springs beating them, 69-34.

Prime Time Player: Tommy Riley

Hope Christian, F: Riley, has seen it all at Hope Christian and Saturday night was his night to shine for the Huskies. Riley put in 25 points in a big win over District opponent Santa Fe Indian, 82-47.

Saturday Starting Five

  • Jacob Holland, Los Lunas: 21 points.
  • Tyler Dorner, Sandia Prep: 18 points.
  • Brandon Saiz, Bernalillo: 27 points.
  • Jared Garduno, Espanola Valley: 18 points

    Directions To The PIT

Where to seed: (3A). The Robertson Cardinals are a scary team because they beat a top-3 team, lose to a middle tier team and at least beat a bottom tier team. The Cardinals win over West Las Vegas was a must on Saturday.

4A Damage Control: (4A). The Belen Eagles need the upset win over Los Lunas more than anything but fell short on Saturday. The bubble could be popped and will need a District Championship to regain any hope.

Who is number one?:(3A). I guess 3A hoops is the talk today as they have so many questions going into March. Is it Hope who lost to St. Mike's on Friday but dominated Santa Fe Indian last night. Is it St. Mike's who beat Hope but lost to Sandia Prep by 11 on Saturday. Maybe Shiprock who hasn't lost to a New Mexico 3A team but we still see the loss to Laguna-Acoma hurting from last month. Road To The PIT in week 14 promises to be a fun one.

2A is showing top to middle tier separation: Texico smashed Clayton and Santa Rosa had a solid 9-point win over Tucumcari on Saturday night. The seeding process will be fun in both the top-8 tier and bottom-8 tier.
