Las Cruces Defeats Mayfield 27-26 In Epic Finish

Las Cruces 27, Mayfield 26
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs won their 6th State Championship under head football coach Jim Miller on Saturday in a thriller. After the Trojans led 14-0 in the first, the Dawgs made it a 20-20 half-time score when Allen Garcia hit a 36-yard field goal just before half. J.J. Granados would score his 42nd touchdown of the season to put the Dawgs up 27-20 in the 3rd quarter until Mayfield's David Stookey scored with just over a minute to play to make it 27-26. The PAT was blocked by Las Cruces defensive back Jalen Bishop. The Bulldawgs finish the year 12-1 and have now won 6 state titles since the 1998 season. The Bulldawgs were led by J.J. Granados on the day with ran for 259-yards and scored one touchdown. Allen Garcia kicked two field goals on the day, one from 36-yards and one from 30-yards. Kam Miller threw for 116-yards, 1 touchdown, and two interceptions. Mayfield was led by Phillip Ehly who scored a rushing touchdown, Isaiah Lerman who returned an interception 62-yards for a score, and by Kavika Johnson who ran for 50-yards and 1 touchdown.

Head Coach: Jim Miller
Jim Miller played quarterback during the 1980's under former Roswell Head Coach Jim Bradley Sr. After high school, Miller went on to play at New Mexico State. He took over as Head Coach at Las Cruces high after Kirk Potter left Las Cruces for Carlsbad and since 1999 Miller has brought home 6 state championships in 6 title appearances. The 1999 team which went 14-0 is considered one of the greatest prep football teams of all-time.
