Robertson Wins 3A Title, Cinderella Lives On

The Robertson Cardinals entered the state tournament as the No. 9 seed and defeated No. 8 Portales, No. 1 St. Mike's, No. 5 Taos, and finally No. 2 Silver to win their first state title under Head Coach Leroy Gonzales.

The Cards battled the Siver City Colts in freezing temperatures at the Cardinals Stadium in Las Vegas, NM. Senior James Gonzales, III, #12, powerplayer for Robertson told NMPreps, "I am super exctied and super shocked. We worked so hard to get here, we were the underdog since the firstround of the play-offs. Now we are the state champs and it is such a great feeling, a dream come true for me and my teammates.

Nathan L'Esperance, QB, #14 for the Cardinals told NMPreps, "I'm just trying to take this win all in. Our team came together and we were not expected to go very far in the play-offs, but we beat Portales, St. Mikes, Taos and Siver. This is such a great feeling and playing at home made it even better."

Dominic Lucero,a Junior for the Cards, #21 said, "No one expected us to win, we are so happy, I'm so psyched that we won, everything right came to us today. I'm already hoping that we'll win the state championship game next year too."

Offense: The Cards lined up with two tight ends and running backs, they ran the sameoffense throughout the whole play-offs and it worked for the Cardinals.

Gonzales, no relation to Head Coach LeRoy Gonzales, #12 also said, "The hardest thing about playing todaywas the snowy ground and trying to makecuts on the hard ground, we simply couldn't digin or out with ourfeet."

Joseph Armijo, #20, with trembling lips told NMPreps at the end of the game, "I'm cold, just cold right now, but I am also very excited." Joseph was surrounded by family and his mother was shedding tears of joy. Joseph also told NM Preps, "I'm excited, I have a whole lot of emotions right now as this is my last game and I got to go out with a bang my senior year." Armijo also explained, I had two interceptions for around 25 yards and a 70 or 80 yard kick off return. Our team played awesome, our defense played great, our lineman did a great job, our defense stopped them pretty good and worked hard. After graduation, I plan to go to UNM or Highlands."
