Who's hot starting off in 2014
Buzz: Ranked No. 1 in Class 5A entering the 2014 half of the season and for good reason. The Eagles have key wins over Gadsden and Cleveland. Their lone loss on the season came against Lawton, Oklahoma, but outside of that loss Hobbs has had the edge against everyone else in New Mexico. Depth is their strength with Cayson Meredith, Jordan Chavarria, and Devante Brown leading the way. They take on Mayfield, Roswell, and Volcano Vista to end the month of January.
Buzz: Alvin Broussard is one of the top up and coming Head Coaches in New Mexico, it's that simple. Sure Sandia has been loaded over the last years, but you have to coach talent and the Matadors winning the SW Dairy Tournament in Clovis against Clovis in overtime is a a big statement. With stars like Jordan Jones, Adam Cumber, Tim Brennan, and Camrron Bean on the roster Sandia has enough high caliber athletes to make a deep run this year. Keep an eye on their January 23rd match up with Cleveland.
Buzz: What a surprise this year's team has been this season. After they opened the season with a 7 point loss to Highland they have been high flying to say the least. They beat wins over Valley, Centennial, and won the Marv Sanders Tournament in style. A two point loss to Hobbs at Tasker shows their road test strength. The scary thing about this group is their youth. Guard Ryan Jones is only a junior, Marcus Williams is just a sophomore. They take on Espanola, Clovis, Sandia, Las Cruces, La Cueva, and Manzano in the later part of January. Battle test month for the Storm up next.
Buzz: They have not played a game since December 20th, which was a 11 point loss to Cleveland. First off, this group is more experienced than any group outside of Sandia. Joseph Anaya is one of the best guards in the State, Aaron Molina is a smooth 6-foot-2 forward, Robert Armijo is a gamer, Bo Coleman is a three year starter, and then there is Adonis Saltes who is a top 5 player in New Mexico. They beat Volcano Vista and Cibola in the first half of the season. APS Tourney is next followed by meetings against Clovis, St. Pius X, and Atrisco Heritage. If they don't reach the final four it would be a shocker.
Buzz: The Coyotes enter the 2014 half of the season undefeated at 11-0 after a 25 point win over district rival Goddard to win the Poe Corn Tournament. They beat Belen by 36, beat Carlsbad by 14, have beat Goddard twice, beat Artesia by 12, beat Centennial by 17, beat and beat Grants by 25. Marquel Warner and Cesar Nava are one of the top duo's in New Mexico and watch for junior guard Frank De La O who is rising on our top prospect watch list quickly. They take on Mayfield, Lovington, Deming, Santa Teresa, and take on Hobbs on the 21st in a marquee match up.

Buzz: After winning the 2013 VFW Tournament beating Carlsbad, Eldorado, and Alamogordo it's clear they are finding their rhythm. This is a deep roster with experienced talent and an experienced coach. If anyone is really going to make a run at Roswell down the road you have to think it's going to be this group. They have a loss to Centennial back in early December, but since then have wins over Santa Teresa, Rio Grande, Eldorado, Carlsbad, and Alamogordo. In later January they take on Kirtland Central, Belen, Grants, and Gallup. Hard not to have high praise regrading this group.

Buzz: It's the same old story with Hope Christian Basketball, they are winning at a high level. The true definition of a program under Head Basketball Coach Jim Murphy. This year they are 8-1 after beating Rio Rancho, Mayfield, and Randall, Texas in Week 6. This year they are led by Zach Williams a rising 6-foot-3 senior and Austin Drake their 6-foot-5 center who continues to impress weekly. After the APS Tournament in early January, they take on Sandia, Manzano, Clovis, and Hobbs (2/2/2014 @ Hobbs) before their district season.
Buzz: The No. 1 ranked team in Class 2A entering the 2014 half of the season. They recently won the Littlefield Tournament in Texas and just beat the Hobbs JV snapping a 69-game winnings streak. This is a really seasoned group headlined by Gentry Doolittle and Miguel Reyna, two that have been starting since their sophomore seasons. They play in the EPAC Tournament in early January then take on Portales, Eunice, and have a monster match up against Clayton on January 31st.
Buzz: Enter 2014 with an impressive record of 10-1. They beat Tularosa, Eunice, Lovington, Hagerman, and Ft. Sumner along the way. They have 12 seniors on the roster and seem to be playing with a chip on their shoulder. The have some solid wins this season, most impressive so far is a big win over Hagerman. They will take on Hagerman again on January 7th, then host the Jon Reid Invite which features Mesilla Valley, NMMI, Jal, Hagerman, and Tularosa. Their lone loss comes against Lovington.
Buzz: The Cowboys are 11-0 entering the 2014 half of the season under Head Coach Brian Shock. Their offense is scoring 88.8 points per game and are close to breaking the 1,000 point total already this season. Lordsburg who is suppose to be decent this year in 2A has been beaten by Cliff 85-56 and 97-69. Cliff will take on Cobre, Lordsburg, Hot Springs, Cloudcroft, and Quemado this month. Hard to see this bunch losing many games at all this year at least during the season.
