Rank
High School
'14 District
Kyle Henderson's Early Summer Outlook
1
Las Cruces
3-6A
The Las Cruces Bulldawgs are 24-2 in the last two seasons and have brought home the last two Class 5A State Titles. Last year after graduating a ton of talent from the 2012 season, the Bulldawgs never skipped a beat outscoring opponents 588-163. More Here
2
Mayfield
3-6A
On offense they are led by NMPreps.com Preseason Mr. Football Candidate Kavika Johnson who blew the roof off as a junior. Straight loaded on both sides of the football. More Here
3
Cleveland
1-6A
Hands down Cleveland is the best team I've seen on my early High School Football Tour. Maybe it's a numbers game, maybe it's the quality of the program, likely a combination, but whatever it is Cleveland has something special going on. More Here
4
Atrisco
5-6A
Last year Atrisco Heritage was pretty good, not a top 10 team in my opinion and it showed in the playoffs against Sandia. That's in the past, year their under Coach Patrick Johnson will be impressive. More Here
5
Rio Rancho
1-6A
I think Rio Rancho will be a step up from last year. Their offense is always going to be there, but if they can step it up on defense, I mean become a A+ defense Rio Rancho is going to win a ton of games and make a real run at it. More Here
6
Hobbs
4-6A
They (critics) said Gleghorn would not win in Hobbs and in year one for the most part they were right with the Eagles going 2-8 and 0-2 in District 4-5A play. In his second year, Gleghorn turned things around in a hurry winning 8 games including a win... More Here
7
La Cueva
2-6A
Really like what I saw at La Cueva today and in my early assessment of Sandia, Eldorado, and now La Cueva the Bears have the most complete team of the three. More Here
8
Clovis
4-6A
Clovis started out the 2013 season 1-4, then turned it up as they always do reaching the playoffs with a 5-5 record after splitting with Carlsbad and Hobbs in district. In the playoffs they topped Volcano Vista 47-21 before losing to Valley in the quarterfinals 55-28. More Here
9
Carlsbad
4-6A
This is the group that Carlsbad has been waiting for. Over the last two seasons most of these incoming seniors have seen PT and are impact players with a great level of experience. More Here
10
Sandia
2-6A
I think they'll take a step back from last season when they won 9-games, but they will still have enough talent to make a run for another district title. Sandia has not won back to back district titles since the 80's. More Here
11
Eldorado
2-6A
Eldorado missed the playoffs last year and that has to be extra motivation for the 2014 season, it seemed like that out on the field today. Every year Eldorado has size and though they have a Blue Chip Quarterback in 6-foot-6, 230 pound Zach Gentry. More Here
12
Cibola
1-6A
Cibola has really transformed under second year Head Coach Rod Williams. He preaches a ton of leadership and that has spilled over onto the program as a whole. More Here
13
Volcano
1-6A
6-Last year's Hawks had a great amount of talent and really, when you look at their schedule Volcano Vista was just 13 points from being 7-5. Two years ago a lot of people forget that Volcano Vista was a final four team... More Here
14
Valley
1-6A
If you are wondering if Valley is going to take a giant step backwards in terms of talent, you're wrong. They will take a dip in their offensive potency in my prediction because you're not going to replace guys like Aaron Molina and Bo Coleman... More Here
15
Manzano
2-6A
Manzano is still a top flight football program in the Metro Area. Though they haven't won as many games under Chad Adcox as they did under Aaron Ocampo they have not falling off in terms of work ethic, attitude, and effort. More Here
16
Gadsden
3-6A
Last year Gadsden was 4-6 under Roy Gerela and with a solid group returning, things were looking promising for the Panthers into the 2014 season until Gerela resigned just days before the season. Joe Vasquez takes over the program.
17
Onate
3-6A
Onate will be led by 1st year head football coach Brent Jaques who takes over for Caleb Hull. The Knights ended their season with a 3-7 record, but ended on a bright note beating Alamogordo 33-28. Onate has plenty of talent, should skyrocket in the rankings soon.
18
Deming
3-6A
Last year was Deming's team. They were straight loaded and went 9-3 on the year with key wins over Artesia and Silver. This year they jump up to Class 6A along side Mayfield, Las Cruces, Onate, and Gadsden. While they lose a solid group
19
Alamogordo
3-6A
In 2013 the Tigers had a tough year under 1st year Head Coach Dale Hooper going 1-9 on the season. The Tigers return 10 on offense and have grown up a bit since last year. Moving into District 4-5A is no easy task however.
20
West Mesa
5-6A
Head Coach Ron McMath continues to build up West Mesa in hopes of taking the Mustangs to the playoffs in 2014. Last year they did go 3-2 in district with wins over Rio Grande, Albuquerque, and Highland.
21
Highland
5-6A
1st Year Head Coach Stacy Washington will take over for Derek Maestas. The Hornets were 1-9 last year and allowed more than 535 points on defense.
22
Santa Fe
1-6A
The Demons and Head Coach Ray Holladay were moved into Class 6A were they have a trendous job in front of them. Last year they went 4-7, but did reac the playoffs after going 3-1 in district.
23
Rio Grande
5-6A
1st Year Head Coach Patrick Quillen takes over the Rio Grande Raves who went 1-9 last year under Jim Danner. Quillen took Foothill to the 8-Man State Title Game in 2013.
24
Albuquerque
5-6A
It's been a very long while since Albuquerque has won a football game, in-fact they enter the season riding a 38-game losing streak. 1st Year Head Coach Curtis Flakes takes over.
