NMPreps.com's 2014 Outlook
1
Las Cruces
6A
After surprising the state by taking the 2013 state title, the Bulldawgs graduate just four players from last year's roster. Kiki Najera will return as a junior after an incredible season and will join Alexis Ruiz as they make another run at the state title.
2
Cibola
6A
The Cougars will be the team to watch this year after only losing three key players to graduation. The team fell short in the quarterfinals last season to district rivals Volcano Vista, but captains Daniel Wilson, Sergio Rivas, Joe Ortiz and Christian Canales won't let that happen again.
3
Sandia Prep
4A
After an incredible 2013 campaign, the Sundevils proved why they were a top program in the state after claiming their fourth straight state title and 17th title over all. The squad will be led by a group of seniors including Ryan Hunter, Jackson Lee and John Twohig who will look for the 5-peat.
4
Eldorado
6A
Ending their season early to future state champs, Las Cruces, the Eagles are looking to bounce back and take back the blue trophy. Eldo will have a fresh team, losing 11 players, but the legacy of an elite program will keep their hopes high. Senior Marshall Metzger will pave the way.
5
Roswell
5A
Upsetting the number 1 seed Academy in the state final will only be motivation to do it again this year for the Coyotes. Roswell returns a number of key players including defender Joseph Contreras, midfielder Luis Garcia and forward Victor Garcia. These guys will make a run in this year's 5A campaign.
6
Sandia
6A
Playing in possibly the hardest district in the state is never easy, however, the Matadors will prove why they belong with the best. With Senior Ford Parker between the posts, Patrick Rhinehart on the d-line and Jarod Hartwig up top, Sandia will give their district a run for their money.
7
Los Lunas
5A
The Tigers may not have walked away with a state final appearance, however, they proved that they have the potential to get there. Goalkeeper Dylan Romero and dynamic duo Alejandro Garcia and Chris Lovato will be the crew to watch this year.
8
La Cueva
6A
Last season proved to be a rough one for the Bears, but this year they will come out fighting after only losing four players to graduation. Seniors Chris Vega, Justin Griego, Garrett Vena and Junior Aaron Otto will take their team to victory.
9
Volcano
6A
With a second place finish last season, the Hawks demonstrated their skill. The squad loses a handful of players, however, return some talent. Ryan Hansen and Parker Conaway are two incoming seniors that will handle the back line well. Ryan Fox and Andrew Luca will keep the offense in check.
10
Farmington
5A
It's been a couple years since Farmington ran away with a state title, but this year could be their chance. Connor Tornquist will be the Senior goalkeeper and has already proved his title and he alone could lead the Scorpions to another district title.
11
Albuquerque
6A
The Bulldogs proved themselves during last season, earning themselves a one seed in state, however, fell through in an intense matchup against Volcano Vista. They will take another shot at the gold with help from Andrea Seazzu and Eli Ramirez.
12
Gadsden
6A
Despite an upsetting lose to rivals Las Cruces in the state semifinals, the Panthers will prove once again why they are a top 5A squad. Junior Edgar Montes and Sophomore Sergio Olvera will be players to watch.
13
Academy
5A
Charger soccer has always been a top program in the state, and a second place finish last year is no exception. With eleven returns from last year, including Luis Ortega, Elijah Lucero and Nicholas Slade, 2014 could be a good year for the team.
14
Bosque
4A
The Bobcats have lived in the shadows of Sandia Prep for the past couple years, however, this season that could change. Klaus Weber will coach a team with key returners like goalkeeper Barrett Meigs, Forward Galo Kleban and Aaron McCallister.
15
Capital
5A
After a strong district run last season, the Jaguars will look to repeat their success in 2014. Seniors Jesus Garcia and Guillermo Navaratte will be key components to this year's roster.
16
Atrisco
6A
Looking to make it to the state tournament once again, the Jaguars will be put to the test after losing 11 seniors. However, goalkeeper Hector Haros and superstar forward Alexis Barba will not let that stop them.
17
Los Alamos
5A
The hilltoppers had a rocky state tournament in 2013, but hope to bounce back this year. Christopher Parker will guard the goal, as Eric Schmalz mans the midfield. This team might be a sleeper in 5A this season.
18
Rio Rancho
6A
In 2013, the Rams had a losing season, not making it to post season play, but this year the return of the Ram is in order. With the likes of Nate Yeager and Jared Dominquez, the Rams could end up second in district play.
19
Onate
6A
Another team that didn't make it to the post season last year, the Knights hope for a state birth come 2014. Leading the way will be seniors Daniel Herreda, Israel Carrillo and Edgar Medina.
20
St. Pius X
5A
Historically, the Sartans are a top soccer program in the state, and Coach Ron Allen and his team are hoping to regain that title. They return nine incoming seniors including Joey Sinclair, Parker Padilla and Connor Sheets. Look for the Sartans to make a statement.
21
Valley
6A
Senior Grant Rowe is easily the best player on the Vikings roster. Add in Carlos Alonso and you have a duo that could take their district by storm. The Vikings have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
22
Cleveland
6A
As one of the newer schools, Cleveland hasn't been able to make a name for themselves in men's soccer, but that might change soon. With the return of Jesse Nieto and Josiah Mahboub, the Storm could shake things up in their district.
23
Highland
6A
Falling by just one goal to the state champions in the first round of state gave the Hornets some much needed confidence heading in to the 2014 season. Led by Junior midfielder Pedro Torres, the Hornets will look to shake up their district.
24
Hope
4A
The Huskies will play in the hardest 4A district in the state, but it's nothing new to them. The team only lost three players to graduation and return Kevin Keys and Derek Nelson. Hope will give Bosque a run for second place in districts.
25
Chaparral
5A
The Lobos joined the map in 2012 by taking the state title. This year, they hope to make it to the final again. Seniors Adrian Ramos and Carlos Chavira will take the team to another winning season.
