Artesia Wins 29th State Football Championship

Breaking: The Artesia Bulldogs have defeated the Centennial Hawks this afternoon by a score of 42-34 at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces, New Mexico to win the Class 5A State Football Championship Game. The Bulldogs have now won an incredible 29 State Football Championships, Head Football Coach Cooper Henderson now has 15 state title rings. Scroll down for the game story.

Recap: The Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-0 lead after a Justin Houghtaling touchdown run, a 75-yard pass from Houghtaling to Ethan Duff, and a 52-yard pass from Houghtaling to Daniel Leon. The Hawks would tie it 21-21, but the Bulldogs would go up again after Houghtaling threw a 30-yard touchdown to Leon to make it 28-21 in the 3rd Quarter. Centennial would tie it again at 28, but Houghtaling kept firing throwing another touchdown this time to Chaz Matthews to make it 35-28 with 6:18 in the 4th Quarter. Centennial would score, but failed on the 2pt conversion to make it 35-34, Artsia's Ethan Duff scored on a 31-yard touchdown run, which looked like it would put the game out of reach. Centennial however, would march down the field in the final minute of the game, but Quarterback Dante Lopez was sacked by Artesia's Codey Scott as time expired. On the day, Houghtaling the 6-foot-5 senior was 17 or 24 passing for 264-yards and 5 total touchdowns.
