Day 2: Johnson Center
Date: June 15th, 2012
Dora 64, To'hajiilee 55
On hand for only a couple games on the main campus of University of New Mexico the first game of the day was between Dora High School and To'haiijlee High School. Dora High School led by junior post player Dylan Privett (NMPreps.com Top 100 Prospect) controlled, owned and destroyed in the paint. Privett is one to watch at this level. He is one of those players flirting with the NMPreps.com Top 100 and could break the list in the Fall version.
The Warriors of To'Haiijlee had no post to match the big man down low. The Warriors kept it close throughout the contest though led by several guards, and they return all 12 players from last years roster.
Rio Grande 48, Cleveland 41
In the battle of 5A programs that could be on the verge of breakout seasons the Ravens of Rio Grande and Storm of Cleveland battled in an afternoon game. Mike Torres (NMPreps.com Top 15 player) of Rio Grande High School was a do everything player in this game. He is 6'6 forward that can take you off the dribble from the top of the key or hey can hit the three and oh yeah he can post you up too. He also had around four or five blocks. A trio of quick guards that love to get to the bucket. Jordan Brooks is a fun speedy guard.
Cleveland is a young squad with tons of potential. They have TONS of new faces suiting up. They have a guard Ryan Jones who was running point and shooting guard that could become a very solid player. Only a sophomore he was the leader of this young squad. Another player who suited up was class of 2016 post player Hattis (Yes, brother of Sara Hattis) who is a big boy already. Still very raw but could become a prize in four years.
Side Note: 2012 Eldorado graduate and State Champion Cameron Glasrud was seen coaching the Eagles C-Team. Looks like he could become the replacement for Adam Huff who took the head coaching job at Piedra Vista High School early this week.
Day 3: Rudy Davalos Center
Date: June 16th, 2012
On Day 3 of the camp we were able to see next level commits Cullen Neal, Eldorado (St. Mary's Commit) and Bryce Alford, La Cueva (UNM Commit) take the floor. Neal and the Eagles took care of business over 4A-Deming High School. One player to keep an eye on for the Eagles next season is Kane Martinez who did a lot of everything and look nice doing it.
The Wildcats have a solid guard in Phillip Longoria who look sharp and held his own.
La Cueva who showed several new faces today was led by Bryce Alford who controlled the pace of the game against a pesky Laguna-Acoma Hawks squad that went 23-1 last season. The Hawks stay close throughout the game only losing by 5. They were led by post player Austin Jones and guard Anthony Carpio.
Other notes show that Atrisco Heritage Academy has a excellent trio of guards led by Phillip LaCour and Corbin Waquie. One newcomer is post Patrick Roark who will battle in the paint.
Two teams that looked sluggish was in the Abq. Academy and Shiprock game. Academy still looking like they don't have the talent they once had. Shiprock couldn't get anything going all game long losing, 45-15.
In the final two games it was all Sandia High School and their full court press destroying Bosque. Tough but good competition for the small 2A school. Guard/Wing, Tim Brennan was solid all game long and could become a sleeper prospect when the season tips off in November. On the other court St. Pius X was taking on Hope Christian in a battle of two powers from their respected classifications. It was close the entire game. Both teams were guard heavy and could be missing some post players. The game was highlighted by point guards Micah Sanchez (St. Pius X) and Micah Murphy (Hope) going at each other.
