Thursday Night Recap

La Cueva moves to 7-1 with 35-27 win over Eldorado
The visiting Eldorado Eagles and the hosting La Cueva Bears faced off in a District 2-5A showdown, in what will go down as another classic rivalry game between the two district foes on Thursday night at Wilson Stadium. Although the Bears had a 21 point lead going into the half the Eagles came out in the third quarter on fire and were lead on the night by Zach Gentry, who had 415 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

The district loss sets the Eagles back a bit and they as they are now below the .500 mark on the season (3-4) and are now (0-1) in district play. The Bears improve to (7-1) on the year and (1-0) in a very tough 2-5A district and this win helps solidify the Bears as one of the top 3 teams in 5A at this point in the season. La Cueva would be lead offensively by Michael Rose, who had a superb rushing effort o the night racking up 280 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground and a key interception on defense in the first half.
Also helping the Bears cause was Wide Receiver Chris Thompson who had a big night receiving with over 140 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Bears Quarterback Zach Silva lead the bears at the QB position on the night throwing for over 150 yards and 2 touchdowns, he also had 1 interception.
Defensively the Bears were lead by Calvin Allen and Chris Loidolt to very stout and effective defensive players. The road to state only gets tougher for both teams as the Bears get set to face off against Manzano in week 10, and The Eagles get set to showdown with Sandia in week 10.
Santa Teresa 34, Centennial 7
The Santa Teresa Desert Warriors moved to 2-6 on the year and 1-0 in district play with a massive win Thursday Night in Las Cruces over Centennial. The Desert Warriors were led by Quarterback A.J. Sedillo who ran for scores of 79 and 20 on the night. Sedillo would finish the night with close to 200-yards rushing on the night and also threw a touchdown pass.
Atrisco Heritage 62, Albuquerque 0
The Atrisco Heritage Jaguars moved to 6-2 Thursday Night with a 52-0 win over the Albuquerque Bulldogs. The Jaguars are just two district games away from being 8-2 on the year, a record that will be very difficult for the NMAA to leave out of the play-off tournament. On the year Atrisco has received big play from quarterback Nate Goode and Running Back Robert Alvidrez.
Los Lunas 56, Gallup 0
The Los Lunas Tigers moved to 8-0 this year with a mercy rule victory over the Gallup Bengals. The Tigers are now just two games away from finishing the year out undefeated. In their last four games, their team play has been phenomenal outscoring the competition 187-6. Los Lunas takes on Miyamura in week 10 and will end their regular season against district rival Valencia.

Metro Area Preview

Cibola 1-6 @ Cleveland 4-3
The Cibola Cougars season is becoming more dim each week. Their season is over right? Again, they are 0-0 in district and still have a shot to play spoiler. The Cougars are banged up with a ton of injuries and after last week's 47-7 loss against Manzano, you have to think that Cleveland is the 14 point favorite. Cibola is scoring just 17.14 points per game. The Cleveland Storm are coming off a 42-0 victory against Hobbs last weekend for a win that should give them momentum heading into the final stretch of the season. Cleveland got 200-yards rushing from Romell Jordan last weekend and 150-yards all purpose form Steven Steele. The defending Class 5A state champs have to put Cibola away early and cannot afford to take this game lightly.
Manzano 6-1 @ Sandia 5-2
Ok Manzano fans, you want respect? Beat Sandia this weekend. It's that simple. Last weekend against Cibola our staff checked out Manzano for the third time this year and it's simple, they are dangerous on offense because of some dynamic junior prospects and they also have the most underrated offensive line in the State of New Mexico. The Monarchs enter this game scoring 38.14 points per game. Last weekend, Junior Running Back Cory Morrow ran for four touchdowns, but the overall play of Junior Quarterback Angel Gonzales has really made this team tough to beat. Remember this: Manzano is just six points away from being the only undefeated team in Class 5A. The Sandia Matadors lost a heart breaker last weekend against Clovis 38-34 given up a score with just six seconds left in the game. The Matadors could bang with any 5A program this year and their defense has been stealer allowing just 13.57 points per game. On offense, Quarterback Craig Coffman has emerged as their top overall offensive prospect, in fact he is the best quarterback in our opinion that Sandia has had since we started covering prep football in 2006. Each team has a ton at stake this weekend and let's face it starting 0-1 in District 2-5A is a scary scenario.
Rio Rancho 6-1 @ Volcano Vista 4-3
The Rio Rancho Rams aka the No. 1 Ranked team in New Mexico Class 5A Football was open last weekend and was at Wilson Stadium to watch Volcano Vista score 33 points in the 4th Quarter to beat Eldorado 39-34. Rewind two weeks ago, Rio Rancho had to go for two to beat Eldorado 39-38, so the Ram's better know that Volcano Vista is very capable of pulling off the upset this weekend. Rio Rancho is scoring 42.42 points per game this season and let's give it up to their offensive line: Dustin Hanson, Devon Bennett, and Robert Salgado are three All-State type linemen providing plenty of time for Rio Rancho's quick strike offense to keep the chains moving each weekend. If you're going to beat Rio Rancho you have to run the football… Volcano Vista has not one, but two running backs that can do just that. Dominico Chavez and Ibra Dominguez have played very well this season and seem to be gaining momentum as we move forward. If the Hawks are unable to beat Rio Rancho this weekend, they need to play the Rams close as 5A is going to get messy regarding play-off bubble teams. On defense for the Hawks watch for DL Chris Carrica, LB Josh Lubhold, and DB Joseph Searcy Ortega.
West Mesa 2-5 vs. Valley 4-3
So West Mesa is out of the play-offs right? Again, no. The Mustangs are actually 2-0 in District Play and have really been playing exceptional in their two district opening games beating Rio Grande 42-0 and beating Highland last weekend 58-21 thanks to four touchdowns from quarterback Dominic Davis. The Mustangs are very capable of paying Valley close or even winning in an upset. As for the Valley Vikings, they blasted Albuquerque as expected last weekend 50-0. Their win was headlined by Quarterback Bo Coleman's 200-all purpose yard night and a big kick off return from Aaron Molina. The Vikings are 2-0 in District Play, so you could call this game the District 5-5A Title Game. Interesting Note: West Mesa Head Coach Ron McMath was Cibola's Defensive Coordinator in 2011, Valley's Head Coach Rico Marceli was Cibola's Offensive Coordinator in 2011.
St. Pius X 4-4 @ Del Norte 2-5
The NMPreps.com Team of the Week defeated previously unbeaten Piedra Vista last weekend 30-28 thanks to four big touchdown runs from TJ Sanchez. The Sartans now 4-4 this year have an opportunity to take the District lead in 5-4A. Del Norte on the year is 2-5 and was open during week eight. The Knights are riding a two game losing streak losing to Aztec and to Volcano Vista.

Southeast Preview

Carlsbad 4-4 @ Hobbs 2-6
The Carlsbad Cavemen have lost their last three out of four games and were dealt a big blow losing to La Cueva last weekend 41-21, a game in which the trailed 41-7 before tacking on two late touchdowns. The Cavemen are scoring 27.37 points per game. Key players to watch include WR Marcus Arrington along with multi purpose player Tyler Hyden. On defense, LB Bobby Mallett continues to have a strong senior season. The Hobbs Eagles are now 2-6 this after losing to Cleveland 42-0 last weekend. Their offense has struggled to put point on the board, scoring just 21.25 points through eight games. Quarterback Brayden Price has been a lone bright spot for Hobbs this season throwing for close to 2,000-yards.
Roswell 5-3 @ Artesia 6-1
The Roswell Coyotes are still in the play-off mix and though they are not favored to beat Artesia or Goddard in their final two games of the season, playing the two 4A giants close will help insure they don't get left out of the 12 team tournament format. The Coyotes are scoring 29.62 points per game and are coming off a 48-0 win over Portales. Artesia was idle last week and their offense did need a rest as they have been putting in work scoring 56.0 per game this year thanks to a monster year at quarterback from Junior Trevor Eulenbach an NMPreps.com Mr. Football Candidate. Artesia should breeze past the Coyotes this weekend setting up an Artesia vs. Goddard Game of the Week in Week 10.
Ruidoso 7-1 @ Portales 2-5
Not sure what is up in Ruidoso, but they need to get back on track. They lost two weeks ago to Silver 38-6 and then last week struggled to put Robertson away beating the Cardinals just 26-21. On the year, Ruidoso Quarterback Bryce Pompos has thrown for 1,143-yards and 12 touchdowns, but has also thrown 12 interceptions. Sophomore Parker Johnson has caught for 660-yards and seven touchdowns this year and on defense, Ruidoso is led by Matthew Carr with 75 total tackles and Linebacker Dylan Demarest who has 95 total tackles. The Portales Rams beat Hope Christian just two weeks ago 19-14, but lost last weekend against Roswell 48-0. Which Portales team will show up for their first district game?
Texico 6-0 @ Estancia 3-4
The Texico Wolverines have not received too much hype this year considering they are one of the few remaining undefeated teams this year. Texico brings a solid rush attack to the table headlined by running back Shay Harrison one of the top backs you don't know about. Texico is a team that has been taking care of business all year long and there is no reason to doubt them this weekend. Estancia at 3-4 lost to Tucumcari 60-20 and the week before they lost to Santa Rosa 51-0. Young team that is playing in a super district. Expect the Bears to struggle again this weekend.
Dexter 3-4 @ Eunice 3-4
The District 4-2A Title Game features two sub .500 teams that are both better than their overall record. Dexter is all defense allowing just 15.28 per game this year. Dexter has also played very tough schedule losing to Texico, Tularosa, Tucumcari, and to Santa Rosa. Eunice has played a tough schedule as well and looks to be powered by Dylan Frank and Eric Leyva on offense. If Eunice can put three scores on the board, they should win. It's going to be a battle for four quarters. Pound for pounds this is one of the top games taking place this weekend.
Loving 1-6 @ NMMI 0-7
The Loving Falcons fell to 1-6 on the season losing to Ft. Sumner last weekend 36-6. NMMI is still looking for their first win of the season. Two weekend ago they lost to St. Michael's 58-7.
Hagerman 7-1 @ Ft. Sumner 4-4
District Championship is at stake in District 2-1A. Hagerman has been rolling and is one of the hottest teams in the State of New Mexico. Hagerman Quarterback Alejandro Ramso is having a big time season numbers wise. Ft. Sumner is Ft. Sumner and is not out until it's over. The Foxes have been led on the year by Michael Giannini and Dallas McDaniel.

Southwest Preview

Alamogordo 2-5 @ Gadsden 4-4
The Alamogordo Tigers are on the ropes after losing two in a row, including their first district loss which came last week against Las Cruces losing 45-13. Alamogordo can pop Gadsden's play-off bubble if they can slay the Panthers. The Gadsden Panthers aka, the most improved team of the 2012 season are at .500 if you can believe that. Last weekend Gadsden proved just how much they have improved with a 31-24 win over Onate, a team they have don't beat in many, many years. Gadsden is scoring 24.12 points per game, but they'll need to hit 30 to ensure another district win this weekend. Quarterback Aaron Gomez has been on point for the Panthers, will his tremendous play spill over into a week nine marquee district game?

Click THE STORYLINE: The GOTW in the State of New Mexico in week nine features the two superior teams in Class 3A, in what many feel is a preview the 2012 3A State Title Game. The numbers that St. Michael's have produced this year through seven games is staggering… They have outscored the competition 338-32 this year, are scoring 48.28 points per game, and are allowing just 4.57 points per game on defense. Their schedule of strength is not impressive with their latest wins coming against Capital and NMMI, two teams that are a combined 1-13 this Here to view this Link.season. Beating Silver in Silver this weekend would silence any critics the Horsemen might have. Silver is no 3A pretender. Their talent comes from the duo of Dakota and Nevada Bencomo, twin brothers that make this team go at linebacker and at running back. Silver is scoring 31.0 points per game and allowing just 9.0 points per game. Their lone loss on the year comes against Deming losing 14-12. Silver is a tough place to play come Friday Night, Horsemen better get off the bus ready to go.Click THE STORYLINE: The GOTW in the State of New Mexico in week nine features the two superior teams in Class 3A, in what many feel is a preview the 2012 3A State Title Game. Onate 3-5 @ Mayfield 4-3
The Onate Knight's suffered a program loss last week losing to Gadsden. If you're a Las Cruces Public School you just can't lose a game to Gadsden. The Knights now 3-5 will miss the play-offs, but this is still a rivalry game, so don;t think they won't leave it all on the field playing for pride. Onate is scoring 25.0 points per game, but their defense has given up 30.37 points per game this year, something they'll need to improve on going into the 2013 season.
Santa Teresa 1-6 @ Centennial 4-3
The Santa Teresa Desert Warriors might be 1-6 on the year, but they have the talent to beat Centennial Thursday Night. Santa Teresa has a very dangerous quarterback by the name of Alex Sedillo who can be the game changer anytime he has the football. On the season, Santa Teresa's lone win comes against EP Irvin. The Centennial Hawks in their first year are still hoping for a play-off spot and all they need to do is beat Santa Teresa and Chaparral to be a hopeful at large. The Hawks have suffered some big season losses to injury losing running back Daniel Conklin and receiver Christian Berrera for the season. Tough game for Centennial tonight, if they win it's a big step towards making the play-offs.
Deming 5-2 @ Chaparral 0-7
The Deming Wildcats are the front runner of District 3-4A and we have them at a six spot right after the five bigs in Class 4A. Deming's strength comes from two power running backs Ismael Garrett and Jerome Sandoval. Friday Night against Chaparral, all Deming has to do is pound the rock and they should coast to a victory. On the year, Deming is scoring 25.0 points per game. The Lobo's long season gets longer as they now enter the district season. Winless in their last seven games, the Lobos are scoring just 15.42 points per game. Chaparral is led by Quarterback John Marquez who has thrown for 1,570-yards and 12 touchdowns and receiver Christian Ramos who has caught for 713-yards and six touchdowns.
Hot Springs 1-7 @ Socorro 4-3
The Tigers are 1-7 on the season entering their first district game of the season. Quarterback/Athlete Nati Villa is a gamer for Hot Springs and he'll need a huge night if the Tigers want to pull off the upset. On the season, Hot Springs is scoring 19.62 points per game and is coming off a 20-13 loss to Hatch Valley. The Socorro Warriors are 4-3 on the season after a 28-21 loss to Centennial. The Warriors are led by Zeb Esquivel and Zach Binger, two athletes that can make big plays on offense when needed. Take Socorro Friday Night by more than two scores.
Hatch 4-3 @ Lordsburg 4-4
The Hatch Valley Bears moved to 4-3 last weekend with a 20-13 win against Hot Springs. Hatch is 0-1 in district play with a 34-28 loss against Tularosa two weeks ago, which is impressive considering what Tularosa has done against other 2A teams this year… Last week Lordsburg lost to Tularosa 50-0. The Lordsburg Mavericks needs this game badly and they'll look to running back Wendell Hayes in hopes that Lordsburg can run away with an upset victory.
Mesilla Valley 4-2 @ Tularosa 6-2
Mesilla Valley at 4-2 has an opportunity to shake up the 2A world with a win over Tularosa. The chances are low, but Mesilla Valley has some offensive weapons that can make plays. Christian Jimenez has done a great job making big plays from the receiver position this year and last week Mesilla Valley Running Back John Jung ran for three touchdowns to in a 18-16 win over Cobre. The Tularosa Wildcats are 6-2 on the season after beating Lordsburg 50-0 thanks to another monster performance from Jim Coleman, Tularosa's impact player. The Wildcats are scoring 30.87 points per game and have a very good defense headlined by linebacker Cameron Martinez.

Northern Preview

Bernalillo 0-7 @ Capital 1-6
Amazing to think that Capital is still in the hunt for the District Championship as is Bernalillo. Remember the winner of District gets an automatic spot in the play-offs. It's unlikely, but it is what it is. Capital scored their first two touchdowns of the season last week beating Espanola 13-6. Bernalillo was idle in week eight and are coming off a 54-0 loss to Piedra Vista and a 34-0 loss to Los Alamos.

Los Alamos 4-4 @ Espanola Valley 1-7
The Los Alamos Hilltoppers are coming off a 62-30 loss to Santa Fe which likely kills their 2012 play-off hopes unless Santa Fe drops their final two district games of the season. On the year, Los Alamos has been led by two underclassmen in Brice Van Etten and Arnoldo Ortiz. Each should earn All-District Honors. Espanola Valley and First Year Head Coach Miguel Medina lost to Capital last weekend 13-6.
Aztec 3-3 @ Farmington 5-2
Tons of griping on the message board about Aztec and Farmington being ranked higher than Piedra Vista and Piedra Vista now being ranked 9th in the NMPreps.com Class 4A Rankings. This weekend they each enter district play 0-0, so the story line is: Win. Aztec is dangerous and when you look at their three season losses they come against teams that are a combined 20-1 this year (Los Lunas, Goddard, and Manzano). Lately, Aztec has been playing Aztec football beating Del Norte by 40 and beating St. Pius X by 19. Beating District Rival Farmington would give them control of District 1-4A. If they can stop Farmington's rush attack they win. The Farmington Scorpions at 5-2 this season are scoring 28.71 points per game and are winners of three in a row. Their rush attack is led by option quarterback Kyle Reynolds and their stud on the field is Essiel Carrasco. Farmington needs to score 35 or more to win this game.
Valencia 2-5 @ Grants 4-3
The Valencia Jaguars are still fighting for a bubble play-off spot. Yes, it's true because Valencia is 2-0 in the District after wins against Gallup and Miyamura. The Jaguars can move to 3-0 with a win over Grants before they play Belen and Los Lunas to end their regular season. If they Jaguars take care of business this weekend, it will set up a monster Valencia County Showdown against Belen in Week 10 next weekend. Last weekend Valencia Running Back Josh Burbank ran for 200-yards against the Patriots. Grants had their late season wake up call against Los Lunas losing 50-0. The Pirates now 1-1 in District need to beat Valencia to keep their play-off hopes alive. On the season Grants is led by multi purpose player Jacob Willcox and Running Back Timothy White.
Piedra Vista 6-1 @ Kirtland Central 3-4
The Piedra Vista Panthers now 6-1 on the season after losing their first game of the year last weekend to St. Pius X 30-28 is still not out of contention of grabbing a top four seed come play-off time. All they have to do is win out. Now, previous to the St. Pius X game, Piedra Vista had earned wins against none-top tier teams, so maybe their lack of schedule of strength caught up with them. This weekend they take on 3-4 Kirtland Central who is coming off a 48-0 loss to 3A Bloomfield. The Panthers are scoring 46.14 points per game which ranks top five in Class 5A-Class 2A. On the season Piedra Vista Receiver Bryson Martinez is having a Mr. Football Type season and watch for Standout Linemen Kyle Ensign to lead way up front. Kirtland Central is 3-4 and there best season win comes against beating Gallup 28-20. Watch for defensive linemen Christian Mackey.
Belen 5-2 @ Miyamura 2-5
Belen has lost to two teams this year: Goddard and to Los Lunas, two teams a combined 14-0 this year. Last weekend against Gallup, the Eagles racked up a 53-0 victory proving they have not fell off offensively without starting quarterback Nick Kurtz who will miss the remainder of his senior season after suffering multiple concussions in 2012. Miyamura has dropped two district games to start their district season losing to Grants and to Valencia, Miyamura's play-offs are dead and they can only hope to play spoiler in the remainder of the season. Watch for Miyamura Quarterback Zach Shank.
Moriarty 4-3 @ Santa Fe 3-4
The Moriarty Pintos were open last week, so they have two weeks think about their 50-0 win over Albuquerque and prepare for what is likely the District 2-4A Champ. This game is very important to win for Moriarty, especially if they don't win the District 5-4A Championship. Moriarty is led by Justin Manning and Adam Smith, two very underrated running backs. The Santa Fe Demons beat up on District Rival Los Alamos last weekend 62-30 thanks to three touchdown runs from Anthony Abeyta and three touchdowns from Jordan Booth-Homer. Santa FE is scoring 32.57 points per game and their defense is led by linebacker Marcus Alarid.
Raton 0-7 @ Robertson 3-4
It's been a long time since both of these programs have been under .500 in the same season. This weekend Robertson is trying to continue to control the district and would move to 2-0 with a win against Raton. The Tigers lost to Taos last weekend 28-21. If Raton does not beat Robertson, their final chance to win a game this season will come in week 10 against West Las Vegas.
Taos 5-2 @ West LV 1-6
The Taos Tigers beat Raton 28-21 to move to 1-0 in District Play. A win against West Las Vegas is a must if they want to set up a potential district championship next weekend against Robertson. On the year, Taos is led by Running back Isaac Gonzales. The West Las Vegas Dons have just one win coming against Santa Fe Indian School.
Academy 2-4 @ SFIS
The Academy Chargers lost a crucial game against Hope Christian last week to begging District Play at 0-1 on the season. The loss might not kick them out of the play-offs, but they are traveling in round one for sure. Academy has a good amount of talent in the backfield, but not sure why this group has been lacking point production in 2012.
Zuni 3-4 Laguna Acoma 3-4
The Zuni Skyhawks at 3-4 on the season should be no match for the Laguna Acoma Hawks this weekend. The Hawks have been rolling in district play and have beaten their last two opponents by a combined score of 94-6. Watch for David McGee and Austin Jones.
Clayton @ Tucumcari
Very interesting game taking place this weekend in District 2-2A. Clayton stayed with Santa Rosa up until half as they trailed just 18-6 before eventually losing 48-12. Clayton has some tremendous size up front anchored by Dakota Montoya and their offensive attack is led by Nick Wiseman. On the year, Clayton is scoring 41.14 points per game. Tucumcari is 6-2 on the year coming off a 60-20 win over Estancia. The Rattlers are socking 31.87 points per game and led by running back Zach Hurd. Tucumcari has the slight edge in this game, but if they are not careful, Clayton will pull off the upset in a hurry.
