ARTESIA, N.M. -- Artesia head coach Rex Henderson is familiar with Onate as the two teams have scrimmaged often in the past.
But this Knights team, led by first-year head coach Scott Veliz, is much different schematically on both sides of the ball, raising the intrigue factor to a high level for Thursday’s 5 p.m. scrimmage at the Bulldog Bowl.
Artesia wrapped up preparations for the scrimmage with a two-hour workout Wednesday afternoon on its home field.
“From best we can tell, they (Onate) run a version of the spread,” Henderson told NMPreps following practice. “But what that means, we won’t know until we really see it. It will be new for us, but it’s new for them too. They’ve had the summer to put it in. (Veliz has coached mostly in Texas) , so he’s not a guy we’re really familiar with. It will be interesting to see what they’re doing and how that program has responded to his leadership and his philosophy.”
