The 2017 New Mexico High School football season is finally here.
After months of waiting impatiently, the action gets underway Wednesday night when Manzano, led by Gatorade Player of the Year hopeful quarterback Jordan Byrd, faces Atrisco Heritage at Nusenda Community Stadium in Albuquerque. Games continue Thursday and Friday with a few on Saturday as well. It’s a four-day football fiesta. Here is our look at the best games of Week 1:
GAME OF THE WEEK: Mayfield at Rio Rancho (Fri., 7 p.m.)
Two Goliaths of Class 6A square off on the Rams’ home field. Interestingly, both teams enter the game with quarterback questions, but of different degrees. Mayfield has yet to decide on a starting quarterback, and Friday’s shortened scrimmage at Roswell only heightened the suspense. Rio Rancho, meanwhile, knows senior Logan Bruere is the starter as they start the quest to defend their state championship. However, Bruere will be making his starting debut, so how he fares under the glare of the Friday Night Lights will be closely watched by everybody.
