CLASS 5A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PREVIEW
Who: No. 2 Belen (12-0) at No. 1 Artesia (10-2);
What: Class 5A State Championship Football Game;
Where: Bulldog Bowl, Artesia, NM;
When: Sat., Dec. 2, 1 p.m.
Between them, Saturday’s combatants in the Class 5A state championship game are a combined 19-0 against opponents from the same classification, so either Artesia or Belen will suffer an untimely first loss against a 5A foe this season
But that doesn’t mean they didn’t come close. Los Lunas, the No. 5 seed in the Class 5A playoffs, lost to the Bulldogs (30-27) and rival Eagles (35-34) by a combined four points, making Tigers coach (and former Artesia assistant coach) Jeremy Maupin one of the best sources for understanding what both teams will bring to the table in Saturday’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown.
