The Lordsburg Maverick Football Team is gearing up for the Class 2A State Football Championship this weekend against Ft. Sumner. Now 7-2 on the season after beating Escalante last weekend 45-22 in the semifinals the Mavericks are one game away from a state championship. While the glory or defeat of the game will come and go from this Saturday’s 2A final, one thing that will be remembered is Johnny Plowman’s thoughtfulness and generosity.

Plowman a 6-foot-0, 200 pound senior from Lordsburg High School has had a fantastic year on the field throwing for 1,861-yards and 26 touchdowns, he’s one of the best players in all of Class 2A, but what he did for a family in Animas, New Mexico surpasses any of his on the field accolades. During halftime of the Jal/Lordsburg football game, Plowman presented the Walter Family a check for $3,000.00 in efforts to help support the Walter family who’s young daughter is battling Leukemia.
Top Players: Last Call: Post Season Award Nominations
“A few years ago, our cheerleaders collected money and sold t-shirts for the Pink Breast Cancer Awareness game and would give the proceeds to cancer patients from Lordsburg. Also, a few years ago, one of our teachers at Lordsburg was fighting breast cancer and passed away. The next year, our Athletic Director (not me the previous one) continued the process and collected money and sold t-shirts and called it "no one fights alone". The t-shirts had a picture of the deceased teacher on the back. The proceeds were given to her family and two other cancer patients, one who was the mom to two of our players. This was done at a pregame ceremony at a football game. The same was done last year and proceeds given to two other cancer patients. This year, Johnny took it upon himself to spearhead the project and to give the proceeds to the Walter family. Johnny is a great role model for kids and his peers,” Said Louie Baisa who is both the Lordsburg Athletic Director and Head Football Coach.
