The Steers have put together quite the season going 24-1-1 and 11-0 in district play under Head Coach Manuel Martinez. This group of mostly underclassmen and just 4 seniors have been nearly unbeatable not only in baseball, but in Football and in Basketball as well.
The football team went 10-1 under Scott Dean outscoring the competition 626-102 before losing in the semifinals to Melrose 36-16. The Magdalena Basketball was perfect going 31-0 on the season under Head Coach Jory Mirabal defeating Logan 61-60 in overtime.
If you combine Magdalena's football, basketball, and baseball team records they are an outstanding: 65-2-1. Standout Dre Montoya who is a senior was the quarterback, started at guard on the basketball team, and is one of the top overall players at the small school level in baseball hitting .469 with 50 RBI's this year. On the mound, he is a perfect 10-0 with 70K's.
The Steers lone loss this year came against Melrose in a series split back on April 25th. The Melrose Buffalos are the No. 2 seed in the baseball tournament, the two teams are highly favored to meet in the 2A/1A finals on Friday.
Whether or not Magdalena brings home the baseball title, their sports year has been one to remember for a town of less than 1,000 residents.
