MPL: St. Pius looks to young QBs in quest for consecutive Class 5A titles

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – St. Pius X beat traditional power Artesia for the Class 5A state championship last December behind possibly the most dynamic quarterback ever to wear the Sartans uniform.

But Drew Ortiz has graduated and is now preparing to become a walk-on at UTEP with the stated goal of someday becoming the Miners starting quarterback.

For first-year head coach David Montoya, who took over for the legendary San Juan Mendoza, who retired soon after St. Pius outscored the Bulldogs, 34-24, at Nusenda Community Stadium last December, the quest to find Ortiz’s successor reached another checkpoint Thursday night with the Sartans’ first appearance in the Metro Passing League at Highlands High School.
