Best Of The Best: Mayfield Trojans

I started NMPreps.com back in 2006 while attending New Mexico State. While living in Las Cruces, New Mexico during the first two-years of NMPreps.com I watched the Trojans win three state titles in a row. During the 2010 season I watched the Trojans win their fourth state title under Head Coach Michael Bradley and today, I rank the best of the best Mayfield Trojan Football Teams over that 2006-2010 time period.

The Best Mayfield Trojans Teams
1. 2007 Mayfield Trojans
This team is probably the best prep football team I've watched other than the 2009 Las Cruces Bulldawgs. They went 12-1 on the year (Only loss was to EP Montwood) and beat Clovis in a wild three overtime shootout to claim their third state title in a row. What made this team so good was senior duo in Quarter Matthew Sandoval and Athlete Nathan Enriquez. Sandoval at 5-foot-5 nearly won the NMPreps.com Mr. Football Award over Artesia's Landy Jones who signed with Oklahoma. Enriquez who was also a Mr. Football Finalist signed with New Mexico after his senior season. Games that stand out include their opening win over Clovis, their one touchdown win over Las Cruces, and their thrilling win over Cibola in the semifinals. Record 12-1, Points For 426, Points Against 183, Team MVP Matthew Sandoval, QB
2. 2006 Mayfield Trojans
This was my first year running NMPreps.com and I watched Mayfield cruise to an undefeated season of 13-0 to win their second title in as any years. While Quarterback Matthew Sandoval and Nathan Enriquez did play impact roles as juniors, this team was led by Athlete Chris Hutchinson, Carlos Olivas, Travis Sanchez, and Chris Story. They played in many tight games on the year and came through when it mattered most. Games that stand out include their opening win over Clovis, one point win over EP Montwood, their 6-2 win over La Cueva, their five point win over Rio Grande, their 10 point win over Alamogordo, their thrilling one touchdown win over Sandia, and their blasting of Alamogordo in the title game. Record 13-0, Points For 342, Points Against 90, Team MVP Chris Story, DL
3. 2010 Mayfield Trojans
It's been a while since any Mayfield team had lost four games in one season. They lost to EP Montwood in overtime 34-31, lost to Eldorado 24-23, were pounded by La Cueva 45-12, and would lose to Las Cruces 14-9 in a game they were winning 9-0 at halftime. Seeded sixth in the play-offs the Trojans beat Rio Rancho in round one and then would beat the No. 3 seed Cleveland 21-13, beat the No. 2 seed La Cueva 21-17 in a statewide shocker, then finally they beat the No. 1 seed, the Manzano Monarchs 69-42. Their late season run was a correlation of peaking at the right time and quality senior leadership. This team never lost sight of the prize when the ney-sayers wrote them off. Key Players Included Axten Franzoy, Brandon Betancourt, Kiefer Payne, Andy Zapien, Sean O'Neal, Matthew Ramondo, Brock Baca, and Lucas Olgaz. Record 10-4, Points For 473, Points Against 254, Team MVP Matthew Ramondo, DL
4. 2009 Mayfield Trojans
The 2009 Trojans got off to a very hot start like always winning their first nine in a row, but again Las Cruces proved to be their Achilles Heel handed them their first loss of the season in a 32-31 thriller. The Trojans won avenge their 2008 loss to Eldorado with a thrilling 36-29 over time win over the Eagles, pound Clovis in the semifinals to meet the La Cueva Bears in the title game. The title game against the Bears was just not their day and they would fall 31-14 as Junior La Cueva Running Back Ronnie Daniels would carry the football for 50 times for over 250-yards. Key Players included Steven Alavos, Michael Hallock, Robert Alvidrez, Wyatt Tharp, James Enriquez, Austin Hooker, Michael Ellis, Andrew Anthony, and Ricky Avelar. Record 11-2, Points For 475, Points Against 155, Team MVP Michael Hallock, ATH
5. 2008 Mayfield Trojans
The Mayfield Trojans of 2008 started out very, very hot to say the least. After graduated 11 All-State Players from that 2007 Power House the Trojans looked as though they would not miss a beat and contend for a four state title. However, the Green Machine's impressive 30 game winning streak against New Mexico teams would finally be broken as the Eldorado Eagles tough manned their way to a 26-20 win at the Field of Dreams. Eldorado stuffed Mayfield four times in a row from the one-yard line. The Trojans would then fall to the eventual state champs, the Las Cruces Bulldawgs twice on the year. They lost in district 22-21 in a game they were winning at halftime and would lose again in the semifinals 35-7. Key players included Isaac McConkey, Zach Tingin, Brycen Salopek, and JD, Ordunez. Record 9-3, Points For 417, Points Against 164, Team MVP: JD Ordunez, DL
