New Mexico High School Football Practice kicks off this week and we are updating our summer high school football rankings. Today we feature No. 13 Sandia Matadors who return quite a bit of talent into the 2016 season.
Head Coach: Kevin Baker
2015 Record: 7-4
2016 Early Outlook: After winning 7-games in somewhat of a transition year, Sandia is poised to make a serious run at the title. Most of the roster returns and that starts with three or four college level players.
The Matadors started the season with a loss but was one of the few teams to not lose back-to-back games all season which is the growing pains for a program set to excel in the following season.
In fact, they have been building for two years now and it looks to be third years a charm, first you look at the quarterback position. Jacob Archibeque (Sr) passed for 894-yards along with rushing for 67-yards.
I'm telling you now he is one of the top quarterbacks by seasons end. Next, is a pick of liter in the backfield led by Estevan Leyba (Jr) who had 246-yards rushing but you should expected more touches.
A new name this season and one that won't take long to know is Devin Woosley (Sr/Wr) who has solid hands, athleticism and overall passion. On the defensive end of the ball you have to next level ready players in Jacob Barnhill (Sr/6-foot-3/DE) and Ben Bertram (DE/6-foot-3/Sr) who has offers from Adams State and New Mexico Highlands. Don't sleep on Sandia, this could be the biggest dark horse ranked 15th (for now).
