Five quarterfinal scores that caught our attention

The quarterfinal round of the 2017 New Mexico High School Football Playoffs is over and there were a number of scores that stood out. Here are our top 5:

1. Hatch Valley 26, St. Michael’s 24: How does a No. 8 seed pull off the upset of the No. 1 seed on the road. Get major contributions from all three phases and score twice in the final five minutes to overcome a 5-point deficit. Hatch Valley scored on offense, defense and special teams. The Bears have now reached the 4A semifinals all four years since the 2014 realignment. As for St. Michael’s, they uncharacteristically committed too many mistakes.

They hardly looked like a team with a 7-game winning streak. The Horseman had a punt blocked that resulted in a TD, they fumbled into their own end zone on a strip sack and the ball was scooped up by HVHS for another score, the passing attack was anemic (1-for-17 before final drive), the offense line was shaky (8 sacks) and a significant portion of their offense came on two long touchdown runs.
