checking to figure out which exact 100 teams would be included. With help from New Mexico High School Football Historian Dan Ford and his latest History of New Mexico High School Football Books, I was able to narrow down the best of the best from the years gone by.
I'm a numbers guy and everyone that follows NMPreps.com knows that what I lack in writing skills, I make up for with graphs, charts, stats, etc. I devised a power ranking for each team that stood out throughout the years.
Points for, points against, points scored in a season, points allowed in a season, number of shutouts in a season, number of games won, and the big one: whether or not a team won a state title at the end of the season.
Knowing that I could get all those numbers accurately that is the direction I went with the power rankings.
Throughout all the feedback and e-mails I've received throughout the top 100 countdown, most has been positive, however there has been some sticklers commenting that the rankings are not accurate because of this and that.
My answer is this: All rankings are debatable and with the system that I used, I strongly feel that these rankings are the best depiction of the top 100 teams that you'll see. The system that I used excluded no team and the same principles were used to rank each team within the top 100. I have updated the rankings after the 2013 Football Season.

Hendo's Breakdown: The Panthers were not even 10-years old as a football program when they posted what is still to this day arguably the best overall prep football team to ever come out of Farmington. Led by a 255 pound Quarterback in Paul Shay and a 1,500-yard receiver in Eric Varnell, this passing attack scored close to 40 points per game, in fact they hit the 69 point and even scored 80 points during their season run. Their only regular season loss was to Durango, Colorado 24-0. Their next loss would come against Goddard in the semifinals of the state play-offs where they would be pounded 49-6. It's important to note that Piedra Vista outscored the district that year 186-12. Please Submit To Players And Coaches From This Team To nmpreps@yahoo.com

Hendo's Breakdown: After posting an impressive 9-4 season record in 2011, the Onate Black Knights returned some very talented weapons to the 2002 season. The triple option offense was in full affect that fall and helped Onate win their first ever state title. They started out the year 3-2, with their only loses coming against Mayfield and Las Cruces. They went on to beat Belen, Santa Teresa, Silver, and Deming (Old District Members) before meeting up with Piedra Vista in the quarterfinal round of the play-offs. They started off the season 0-2 and at this point most had already written off the Rocket's chance for a repeat. Then Goddard, simply kicked it into high gear and besides their 31-14 loss to Clovis in Clovis they never looked back. They beat Artesia 47-35 for the district title, then beat Farmington in the quarterfinals. They traveled to face upstart program Volcano Vista who had only lost one game at the time and beat the Hawks at Milne Stadium 55-14. They would face an undefeated Belen Eagles team in Belen and thanks to some 4th quarter heroics from David Vega, the Rockets beat Belen 28-21 in front of 5,000 fans in an epic state title game. However, the fall of '81 prep football in Roswell seemed to never look back. In '81 they turned the corner by going 8-2, the following year in '83 they went 7-3, and in 1983 they fielded one of their best teams of all time.
