Today, yet another addition to the Coaching Carousel as Aztec's Brad Hirsch has officially resigned from Aztec. Hirsch, the Tiger's Coach for the last eight seasons resigns from Aztec following a perfect 13-0 season run to help the Tiger's win their first state title since 1953.
So why now is the question?
"It's a special program here and it was very fun to say the least. My future plans are unknown currently, however I want to make myself available if called upon. Football is what I do and not who I am.
I feel I could walk away right now and still be content. I have done everything here in Aztec that I could possibly do and we'll just have to wait and see what is next," commented Hirsch.
Hirsch's two sons have graduated from Aztec. Derrick, the youngest will graduate in the spring of 2012 and Tylin graduated in 2011. Hirsch was named the 2011 4A Coach of the Year by NMPreps.com and over Hirsch's career he's been a flat out winner.
According to New Mexico High School Football Historian Dan Ford, Hirsch was the second winningest active New Mexico Football Coach with a 85-16 record in 101 games.
So what's next?
Hirsch, who has ties to the California Junior College scene and has always been rumored to take a college coaching position to his native California roots or he could likely take an assistant position at the high school level.
Whatever the next step is, it's very likely we won't see him as a head football coach any time soon. So, to update you, the following programs are open: Aztec, Manzano, Del Norte, Gadsden, West Mesa, Espanola Valley, and Mesilla Valley.
