5A Boys Championship - The PIT (Albuquerque, NM)
The No. 6 Las Cruces Bulldawgs took on the No. 4 Clovis Wildcats in the 5A State Championship Title Game in a matchup that featured two star studded programs.
Coaching and execution would play a major factor in the matchup and the Bulldawgs and head coach William Benjamin ran a simple yet deadly offensive and defensive scheme that had the Bulldawgs looking the best they have all year when it mattered the most.
The Bulldawgs limited the Wildcats to shooting 34% from the field while connecting on 61% shooting from the field and outscored the Wildcats 19-8 in the final quarter of play. Leading the way for the Wildcats on the night was D.J. Blackmon who had a team high 14 points and Drew Cole also pitched in with 11 points and 6 rebounds.
John Dawson was held to only 2 points on the night and was plagued by foul trouble all game long and was never able to establish a rhythm. THe Bulldawgs found balanced scoring among their roster as 4 players scored in the double digits.
Leading the way for the Bulldawgs was Kai Williams who had 16 point and 13 rebounds, also chipping in wasTrevor Noel who had 16 points and 3 rebounds and Joseph Garza who was money from the field scoring 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
Also contributing to the Bulldawg cause was Gilbert Sigala who had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Not only can the Bulldawgs claim to be the best there is in 5A football but they can now be considered the best team in 5A basketball thanks to an impressive game plan and great team chemistry.
