Five predictions for 2018 sure to come true
First in a series of team articles reviewing the 2017 season and looking ahead to 2018
All in all, Onate’s power spread offense functioned about as well as first-year head coach Scott Veliz could have expected as senior quarterback Aaron Sanchez threw for over 2,000 yards and rushed for 570 yards in just eight games.
The Knights’ defense, though, struggled to stop most of their opponents as they allowed an average of 54 points in Onate’s eight losses, including 50+ points five times.
Thus, Veliz heads into the off-season with two important objectives: 1) Find a suitable successor to Sanchez; and 2) Fix the leaky defense. If he achieves those two things, Onate’s win total should increase in 2018.
Replacing Sanchez, though, won’t be easy. The Knights averaged 39.3 points in the first three district games with Sanchez behind center, but scored just seven points in the final two games after Sanchez was injured.
