The Coyotes are (12-0) heading into the second-half of the season and only look to get better. They are only one of two teams to be ranked with the top spot in 4A hoops. The only other team is the defending champs Santa Teresa Desert Warriors who were the preseason number one and held the spot for three weeks. The Desert Warriors are currently ranked number 4 for week ten.
Capital Jaguars come in ranked number two with a 12-1 start to the season in which they have beat some of 4A's sleeper teams. The Jaguars are packed with a several three or four year varsity players. At, number three is the St. Pius X Sartans who won last week at the Gallup Invite over fellow top ten team Gallup High School.
Rounding out the top five for week ten is the Espanola Valley Sundevils who at 13-5 have placed themselves back among the best in the class after having a down year in 2012.

Candidates: Mid-Season Player of the Year

Each season, we not only have division awards (Big School Division: 5A - 3A) but we award each classification as well. This is a list of our frontrunners for the 2013 Class 4A Player of the Year Award given to the top player for the regular season. There is still plenty of time for other players to climb the charts.
2013 Candidates - 4A Player of the Year
Brandon Saiz, G, Bernalillo: Saiz is a 22ppg guard that has exploded several times against top competition. One of the best guards not only in 4A but the state as well.
Mario Ramirez, F, Santa Teresa: The double-double machine has been solid all season long putting the Desert Warriors among the best teams in the class.
Anthony Olguin, F, Roswell: The senior forward won player of the week a few weeks ago for the entire state after posting high numbers at the Poe Corn Invite.

Michael Lopez, G/F, Capital: Lopez a four-year varsity player for the Jaguars has improved his stock this season playing closer to the rim. Lopez is a main reason why the Jaguars are 12-1.
Ben Romero, G, Los Lunas: The guard has been putting in big points for the Tigers and carrying them some nights. Highly athletic scoring guard that can knock down three after three.
Cesar Nava, G, Roswell: Nava is one of the top junior guards in the state and classification. He continues to play consistent all season long.
Eric Saenz, G, Deming: Was first mentioned this summer on our countdown of unknown players ready to breakout. Has the Wildcats as a top 10 team for the first time in a few years.
Steven Tyler Jacquez, G, Piedra Vista: The spot up shooter was just released on the NMPreps.com Top 150 players for New Mexico (#87) . He has been playing very consistent this year and the Panthers have been playing great in 2013 and to end 2012.

Tommy Lindrgen, F, Albuquerque Academy: The Chargers are back into the Top-10 in New Mexico 4A basketball and Lindgren is a major reason why. Averaging around 14 points and 7 rebounds a game he is making a name for himself.
Micah Sanchez, G, St. Pius X: Sanchez is the completely player for the Sartans backcourt. He controls the tempo of every game and his presence alone is crucial for the Sartans.
Other Names: Christian Mackey (Kirtland Central), Nick Stafford (St. Pius X), Lionel Kinsel (Gallup), Nathan Cordova (Espanola Valley), Christian Martinez (Capital), Jacob Fernandez (Santa Teresa), Matt Hufhines (Farmington), Jacob Armijo (Piedra Vista)

Candidates: Coach of the Year

Each season along with a state coach of the year we have a classification coach of the year. Many coaches who have been major factors in teams success.
2013 Candidates - Coach of the Year
Britt Cooper, Roswell: Cooper has been one of the best if not the best coaches in 4A hoops for the past five to six years. Coopers team is one of the highest ranked 4A teams in New Mexcio - #3 in NM Top-25 for week ten.
Roy Morgan, Albuquerque Academy: The Chargers coach had the difficult task of replacing a legend in Mike Brown but in his third year Morgan has the Chargers back among the best in 4A.
Robert Haack, Santa Teresa: It's very difficult to repeat and come off a title year, well Haack hasn't lost a beat as the Desert Warriors are one of the most dangerous teams.
Terry Darnell, Bernalillo: Coaching one of the smallest 4A schools in New Mexico, Darnell had his team ranked in the Top-25 and looking a favorite for the PIT.
Richard Martinez, Espanola Valley: Martinez once again has his Sundevils in the top of the classification and with a very young and inexperienced team.
Mark Senteney, Capital: The Jaguars are 12-1 and could be on the verge to returning to the Final Four or more.
Mike Mondragon, Moriarty: For a program that has seen success in over 20 years the Pintos head coach is quickly putting his name in the batch of rising coaches.
Paul Maynes, Deming: The Wildcats at 12-3 are silently become a favorite for the State Tournament. Look for them to do battle in 3-4A.

Eight Teams for the Final Four

We still have half a season to go but I will try and give my best prediction. I had to stay with 8 picks and will carry it down as the season goes.
2013 - Final Four Contenders
Most Confident Pick: Roswell Coyotes (12-0) : Okay, this pick is obvious for many reasons and I will tell you this could be one of the best Coyote teams, counting the back-to-back title teams.
I Like: St. Pius X Sartans (8-3): The Sartans are a special teams, they have a few three-year starters that could lead them to the title. Coach Segura is among the best and has three rings already.
More In Than Out: Capital Jaguars (12-1): I was hesitate to ut above SPX but the Jaguars were a favorite of mine to be in the title game last season and got upset. Is this the year or not? I'm still trying to answer but I 'reeeeaaaallly' like what they bring to the table.
51% like them as a F4: Santa Teresa Desert Warriors (8-5): Yes, they are the defending champs but there has also been plenty of years when they went in ranked very high and got upset early. They are darn good though.

DARKHORSES FOR FINAL FOUR

49% out of F4: Deming Wildcats (12-3): The Wildcats are dangerous and could be that cinderella team that makes it to the Final Four. If you forgot 9-seed Kirtland Central made it to the Final Four (2012) and 8-seed Goddard made it (2011). Depending on the bracket make up they could be that team. Remember that I said that.
Not a bad pick: Albuquerque Academy (8-3): They have been winning big games up until the Los Lunas loss but the body of work is there for this team to make it back to the Final Four.
Close but more work: Los Lunas Tigers (8-5): The Tigers were high on everyone's list this preseason and they are still a very good team but just haven't proofed it yet.
Win Now: Gallup Bengals (7-6): The Bengals are some what of a dark horse but we said that last year too. I like the coaching staff, players and chances to surprise people.
