MidKnight Madness: Onate wants to be first team on, last team off the field

Borrowing a concept conceived decades ago by college basketball coaches, Onate will be the first New Mexico high school football team to take the practice fields for the start of preseason camp.

Early Monday morning at 12:01 a.m., the Knights and first-year head coach Scott Veliz welcome “Midnight Madness” to Las Cruces when they run onto the practice field at Onate High School for their first full-team workout leading up to the Aug. 25 season opener at Cleveland.

“We got the idea from college basketball,” Veliz told NMPreps earlier this week. “We thought, ‘Why don’t we do it.’ Our line of thinking is we’re the first team on the field in July and the last team off in December (after the state championship game). It’s a Friday Night Lights vibe for our first practice. The kids and parents all get excited.”
