top 25 baseball teams in New Mexico - The countdown
#16 mayfield trojans
Buzz: A disappointing season for the Mayfield Trojans in 2012 after the Trojans found a way to win District 3-5A, only to lose in the first round of the New Mexico 5A Baseball Tournament in the first round to Hobbs. They Trojans do return some good experience from the 2012 season which should spill over into what could be two district titles in two years. District 3-5A is going to be a battle, but with Manny Lopez returning who hit for .472 in 2012 and Josh Gomez along with David Montoya ready to step up, Mayfield seems primed for a solid season. A tough early season awaits, so don't be surprised if they take a few games on the chin early on. Mayfield has talent and has to be eager to get back to the Elite Eight.
#17 valley vikings
Buzz: The Valley Vikings for some reason are always a team that gets over looked in the Metro Area, but they don't seem to mind and continue to do work in crunch time. This year District 5-5A is going to be a three horse race with Atrisco Heritage added to the equation. Valley loses some very good talent to graduation, but the foundation of baseball success runs deep in the Valley known for their huge fan following. This year Andrew Montoya who was All-Metro as a junior returns. Other than that, the Valley Roster is new names to us. Don't sleep on this team as they have proved over the last few years that they are a small enrollment 5A program with a ton of pop in their bat.
#18 hobbs eagles
Buzz: The Hobbs Eagles went 16-15 last season and lose some good pitching depth most notablyely losing Victor Porras along with David Thomas each who had a very strong senior campaigns in 2012. They also lose Tyler Janecka one of their top outfielders from last year and lose multi purpose player Caleb Young. Returning for the 2013 season are Junior Nathan Ross, Josh Young, and it looks like the best on the mound for the Eagles will be Brayden Price who threw for over 2,000-yards at quarter for Hobbs during the football season. They beat Mayfield in the 2012 First Round Play-Offs before losing to Volcano Vista. A play-off spot is likely, but reaching the Elite Eight or Final Four seems a very far reach for this group unless they find some on the field chemistry.
#19 onate knights
Buzz: Really like what this team has returning and likely the surprise team of the 2013 if they stay healthy. Last year this group started six underclassmen who each had productive seasons. Junior to be Tristen Tellas hit four home runs last year, Anthony Garcia hit for .367 with seven doubles and also was 4-5 on the mound with 22K's. Rickey Rivera hit for .340, and last year as a freshmen Carlos Jimenez had a huge late season at the plate. Pitching wise, watch for Ben Koerper who was 3-4 last year as a Sophomore with 45K's. Onate still looks to be one year away from really making a run, but let's consider them the District 3-5A Spoiler gunning for both Las Cruces and Mayfield.
#20 Gadsden panthers
Buzz: Gadsden got hot last year and ended up grabbing the number 11 seed in the Class 5A Baseball Tournament. This year's roster does have some retiring talent from last year. Miguel Rubio, Nathan Diaz, Jose Chairez, and Ryan Alvarez and Anthony Acevedo each return. The bad news they lose six senior starters, so if Gadsden wants to prove they deserve to be in the top 25, they need to win some big games early. Question mark team and that is likely not as good as last year.
