Santa Fe High School Names New Football Coach
Santa Fe, New Mexico - On Friday, January 27th, 2017 Santa Fe High School hired their next Head Football Coach. Andrew Martinez accepted the job Friday evening. Martinez has been the St. Michael's Defensive Coordinator since 2002.
"I accepted the job Friday evening. Thought long and hard about it, but I grew up in Santa Fe and have fond memories of the Demon's Football Program from when I was in grade school, at that time Ivan Head Stadium was the place to be on Friday Night. I understand the challenges that come with the program and I look forward to playing a bigger role within the community, working with the kids from Santa Fe, and building a successful program," Said Martinez on Saturday morning.
Martinez has been played a pivotal role for the St. Michael's Horsemen Football Program and is accustomed to success. Since Martinez joined the Horsemen in 2000, the Horsemen have won State Championships in 2003, 2007, and in 2012 when the Horsemen completed the perfect season going 13-0.
"Joey Fernandez (St. Michael's Current Head Football Coach) was very supportive of me during the interview process. He gave his full support and told me that I had paid my dues while on staff (laughing). Fernandez and I are very close, but he understands what this opportunity means to me and gave me his full blessing."
The Demons were moved up to Class 6A during the 2015 season and have never won a game since, going 0-10 in 2015 and 0-10 again this past season in 2016. The Demons did reach the playoffs twice under Holladay during the 2013 and 2012 season both losing in the first round.
For the 2017 season, the Demons will play as an independent and their schedule will include: St. Michael's, Capital, Los Alamos, Taos, Goddard, Roswell, Chaparral, and Escalante (two games will be added).
"We want to compete in every game and build the program, it's going to take time, but we're going to get right into the weight room and really get these kids back into the community doing volunteer work and get the youth and the City of Santa Fe excited about Demon Football again."
