Former Carlsbad standout pitcher Trevor Rogers, the 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year in New Mexico, agreed to terms Tuesday with the Miami Marlins, the major league club that selected the southpaw eight day ago.
According to multiple media reports, including ESPN and the Miami Herald, Rogers will receive a $3.4 million signing bonus from the Marlins, pending a physical.
Rogers tweeted Tuesday afternoon that he was headed to Miami, saying goodbye to Carlsbad in the process: "I'll miss you Carlsbad, but Florida is calling my name and it's time to get to work."
By agreeing to a contract with the Marlins, Rogers will forego a college baseball career. He signed a letter of intent with Texas Tech several months ago.
Once he passes his physical by Marlins team doctors, Rogers will likely be assigned to one of three minor league teams belonging to Miami: GCL Marlins of the Gulf Coast League (Rookie), Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League (Short-season A) or the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League (Long-season A).
Rogers, the first Carlsbad player drafted since Cody Ross in 1999, amassed an impressive 11-0 record and 0.33 earned run average in 63.1 innings pitched for the Cavemen this season, tossing four no-hitters and one perfect game (April 21 against Gadsden) along the way.
Rogers struck out 134 batters, an average of more than two strikeouts per inning and the fifth highest single season total in New Mexico history based on the records at the NMAA’s web site.
